I'm sure this has been posted before so I apologize for the repeat.

I've been reading as much as I can but need advice on wedges. As you can see I've been going with a mixed bag of wedges and I'm looking at replacing them with Vokey's.

My set of Titliest came with a 45° PW and a 50° W. I was thinking of adding a 56° and 60° Vokey.

You guys think that's a pretty good approach?

Thanks in advance for the help and advice.

The only problem I ever had with Vokeys is just a little too much bounce for non-summertime play. Great feeling wedge but not for winter or spring.

You can get a lower bounce option...

I have the 54/10, 60/08...

You could even bend the 54/56 to 55 and have a nice 5 degree spread.

That's a great idea TourSpoon, I didn't even think of that.

Thanks.

The power of the forum comes through again! Thanks for the rep point.

I bent my Vokey 54 to 56 and its tremendous. I would try getting a wedge bent--most tour pros do it for feel because it changes the bounce.

"People think the size of the head is most important. Wrong. It's getting a quality shaft. test different shafts to see which goes the straightest. Also, more degrees of loft on the head is better than less. Eleven degrees is about right."

I'm curious r7 425 why you wouldn't just buy a Vokey 56°? Is it because it's a different bounce then what you can buy?

i have a vokey 60 º and play mainly in colder months here in NY. It works fine and it's a great club.

Its all about feel. Trust me-bend your Ping 54 to 56 and see what happens. My chipping improved greatly because of the new bounce specs---the ball comes of a lot crisper when you bend a 54 to a 56. Get yours bent and if you dont like it you can get it bend back.

Hi,

This is a good idea if your going for vokeys...

I personally use cleveland wedges and find them great. They are comfortable and have great bounce and flight in winter and summer months. But this could just be because I am very used to them...

It is all about how you like them, try a few different brands and angles and see which ones feels right for you. Good Luck

why would the ball come off a lot crisper when you bend a 54 to a 56 than just hitting 56? are you talking about all wedges or just vokeys?

i don't like the idea of bending wedges even tho i've never done it.

Its real easy-go get it bent and see what happens--why be against bending a club. Tour Pros bend them every week. The bounce changes and thus the face is more of a slider instead of a digger and most chips are sliders --most people when they chip are not diggers

i love a low bounce because i really like to take a big fat divot but the greens keeper sure doesent

I can agree with the statement about cleveland they make the number 1 wedege IMO i have a 60 degree 588 chrome---they have a soft face compared to the taylormade

What kind of shot are you trying to pull off with the 55 and 60 degree wedges? Full swing?

Honestly with a handicap above 10, I would greatly suggest learning to love your gap wedge or pitching wedge for all shots below 80 yards.

If you have to buy a wedge buy a sand wedge of 54* with a bounce of 12, great for sand and the rough, where you should hit it 99% of the time within 60 yards or so, if you are in the rough, the 12* bounce will inhibit a chunk.

I have still not made peace with my 58* Callaway wedge with 8* bounce, I use it for "must hit" floppers, still working on the 25 yard half swing hop and stop, 1 of about 8 in practice are either chili dippers or a blade...which pisses me off and allows negative thoughts to creep into the old noggin while playing.

    • Next update: our Saturday (6/21) round is booked at Reserve Run (Poland, OH). It’s about 50 minutes from Cranberry Highlands. Tee times are 12:40, 12:48, 12:56, and 1:04.  I’ll send some thoughts on hotel locations, etc. later, but we have our golf booked!!!
    • More often than not its my 58 degree wedge. But I might use the sand wedge or the p-wedge depending upon what's between me and the flagstick.
    • My rule of thumb for anything inside a 100 yards is my PW.  Of course, my SW and LW come into the picture when I need to loft it more and especially when I have little green to work with.
    • let me check, I think my volleyball tournament is on 6/21, and we are just driving up and back the same day. I may be masochistic enough to then to play golf on Sunday (6/22). 🤣. 6/21 is 100% out for me.
    • Thank you for sharing that. He was quite good wasn't he? I was curious, so took a look. He played 19 PGA Tour stroke play events in 2000. He was 263 under par (they did point that out at the end of the video). If you look at each event he played in and take the best score in each event for a player not called Tiger Woods, that combined field score was -259. So he beat the field - where the field resets every week - over the course of an entire season. That's mind blowing.
