Just to finalize the thread... I ended up playing two rounds at Lost Canyons in Simi Valley ( http://www.lostcanyons.com ) and it was A W S O M E ! Of course it wasn't the "ocean experience" I was looking for, but typical canyon-desert course (actually two courses), kind of Las Vegas style, design beautifully by Pete Dye and Freddie Couples. Great shape, friendly staff, good pace, awsome layout - top notch place.
Highly recommended if you're ever in the L.A. area.
Next trip I'll try the SandPiper (near Santa Barbara). I found out about it too late to arrange it, but it's called "Pebble Beach for the poor"
It's $130 on the weekend and it supposed to have all the spectacular holes right on the ocean, just like the PB...

Paul from Big Break IV is from Simi Valley. See him out there playing anywhere?

I wasn't too impressed with SandPiper. There are fewer ocean holes than one would expect.

The real "Pebble Beach for the poor" in LA is Los Verdes. Unfortunately, everyone knows it so it's always a slow round. However, it is one of the best deals in all of CA. Here's the 411: Los Verdes Golf Course 7000 W. Los Verdes Dr. Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90274 Reservations: (310) 377-7370 Pro Shop: (310) 377-0338 Banquet: (310) 377-7888 Reg. 18-hole Par 71, 6,651 yds. (72.4 rating, 122 slope). Beautiful rolling hills, overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. Facilities: Pro shop, equipment and cart rentals, golf lessons, driving range, practice putting greens, banquet facilities, coffee shop and cocktail lounge.

I played in a minitour event with that guy in Simi before. He shot 3 under and made it look easy.

Anyway, Lost Canyons is/was a good choice. If I'd have seen this thread earlier, there are 2 other course within 15 minutes, that I would recommend. Moorpark CC and Rustic Canyon. Maybe for your next trip...
