I'm soon to get a job and save up for some new irons. I currently have some Crappy Sport check Ram Clubs that i got for christmas when i was around 10 years old.

I know The suggestion from everyone is to get professionally fitted for clubs at a local golf store, but Right now im just looking for some suggestions on Shaft type, and what type of iron I want (Players Irons, etc)

I really dont know all the types between Muscle Backs etc.

Im 15 an 8.1 Handicap, golf almost every day, and looking for something that can really improve contact and that sweet feel when I hit it well. Im not looking for a ton of forgiveness in the iron because I dont have much of a problem with that. (Although a little wont hurt)

I can afford almost anything because I'll most likely look on ebay for someone selling the brand new irons for a deal. I'd like any suggestions by any club maker.

So let me know what you'd suggest for me. Any other info. you'd need from me just feel free to ask.

If you want a classic feel, go with a set of Pings. They have a G10 and a Rapture set out right now. Mizuno has always had a good name with irons. Titleist has a new set, the 755.CB. Then there's your offerings from Nike and Taylor Made.

If your handicap is what you say it is then you won't need to bother with graphite shafts. They cost more and won't do much to benefit a better player. As far as the flex, though, that's a tough call. You're young, but you'll want to keep these for a while. Chances are you don't swing hard enough for stiff shafts, but you might within a few years. So you can get a regular flex now, and possibly grow out of them, or you can buy a stiff flex now and struggle until your body and swing grow into those.

some good points, but I would add...

1) I know plenty of 15 yr olds that can load a stiff shaft... but if you can't, I would get whatever fits you NOW... unless you are right on the edge. 2) The aforementioned clubs are good... but there's definately others out there. I love my Adams Idea Pro Forged... they are fantastic and you don't have to get hybrids... very nice forged players iron. I also like Titleist, Cleveland, and Mizuno, all make a great players cavity. Then there's the non OEM, quality components guys (I will add links below). I would go with a players cavity since they offer some forgiveness, but still give feedback and control. Many companies offer nice players cavities that are forged and have the look of a blade at setup. As to which one specifically... whichever fits your eye and feels good to you. 3) shaft... depends on the trajectory you are looking for and feel you prefer. Some good shafts to consider are Project X, Dynamic Gold 300, and Black Golds. For me the Black Golds feel a little better than the project X... they feel a little less boardy and have a nice mid-low ball flight. The DG's are great too... probably the most popular shaft around for low handicappers. Really, you can't go wrong with any of these, just pick what feels and works best for you. http://www.miuragolf.com/ http://www.scratchgolf.com/ http://www.smtgolf.com/ http://www.kzgolf.com/layout9.asp?id=588&page;=31349

Thats some great info guys. I really wouldnt know my swing speed with my irons, but I know I have a swing speed of anywhere inbetween 95-105 MPH with my driver.

As far as recommending the players cavity irons, which known sets are players Cavity?

Do almost all blade irons have a small clubface? I'd like something around the same size I have now.

players cavity: Ping S58, Ping i10, taylormade r7 TP, Titleist AP2, Mizuno MP-57 or MP-60, Cleveland CG Reds, Nike CCi Forged, Titleist 755, Taylormade Rac LT, Callaway X Forged.... all up that alley.

player's blade: Taylormade Rac TP forged, Titleist ZM Forged, Mizuno MP-32 or MP-67, Cleveland CG1, Nike Forged Blade... Also a nice compromise: Titleist ZB Forged are Cavity backs 3-7 and blades 8-PW. yes, since blade irons are geared at the better player, almost all of them have a small offset, small clubface, small sweet spot, thin top line, low moi, and high workability. For your handicap I would reccomend the cavity backs. I would try both the player's cavity and blade, before deciding which category I wanted, though. EDIT: Hogan's probably got offerings in both of those categories. I would check that out too.

With all my irons currently, Every single shot has a high ball flight. I wanna make the ball go lower with my mid to long irons but still have the high trajectory with my high irons. Is that something to do with the shaft? I wouldn't have a clue what kind of shafts to get.

well, i'm not sure what you mean by trajectory. Obviously the lofts of the clubs will still act the same. i.e. a PW will fly higher than a 2 iron. shafts usually affect overall trajectory. ie- whole set flies lower or higher.

Also, i'm not much of an expect on this, so you might want to wait for someone who knows what they are talking about.

Ya your right, Sorry, i worded that wrong. Overall i want a lower ball flight with all of my irons. And would like the right shafts to help that.

Demo everything you can. If you want some player's cavities, I'd try the new Titleists AP models, the Srixon i-701, and Mizuno MP 57.

By the time you have saved enough money for "new" irons there will be other new models out. I would just save the cash if I were you and then make your way out to a couple of demo days.

Saving around 800 Dollars for me will take 2-3 months. Sure there will be other models out there. But by the time I have enough money for Sayy.. a set of i10's I'd probably not be able to afford the newer set out, and would still be satisfied with the older models.

Try out the Ping Eye 2's ...they are very cheap and very forgiving...I recommend evryone to at least give them a demo

"People think the size of the head is most important. Wrong. It's getting a quality shaft. test different shafts to see which goes the straightest. Also, more degrees of loft on the head is better than less. Eleven degrees is about right."

Dent,

Aside from getting fitted, my recommendation to you is to write down exactly how you want all of your clubs to play. You've already mentioned you want a lower ball flight, want workability and possibility interested in a cavity back for forgiveness.

I would take all of this information to a professional and let him make recommendations. By professional, I mean, a fitter. You don't have to be fitted for this, however, he or she can tell you which shafts and irons will provide what you are seeking. Also, you may want to think about the loft of certain clubs. Some clubs play a club longer than others. If you want to be in a position where your 9I plays like an 8I, that becomes another option.

The one big reason that I constantly recommend getting fitted is because of the options you get. A good, professional fitting will allow you to hit the same shaft with various heads and visa-versa. Many local stores do not have this option. They can also tweek your equipment for improved playability, then and there. You can see instant improvement.

Speak with Everado or GasCan. I'm sure they can expound, further.

Actually, it the opposite. For a lower ball flight, you want a higher kick point.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
