I miss the sound of metal on concrete or tarmac. It's the sound of the walk from the clubhouse to the 1st tee - one of the finest walks you can take!

EXACTLY!!! It let's you know that you are entering a different world, speeds up the pulse, I always got a rush from that.

I happen to agree about missing the sound the metal spikes made when walking on paved areas. But I don't miss them on the course or the marks they could leave by draggin ones foot...
To be honest, I'm surprised the PGA still allows them.

Cheers,
Eric

I miss the way they suction cupped my feet to the ground, and like others have mentioned there was something appealing about the sound they made when walking on hard surfaces. However, I feel greens are in far better condition without metal spikes penetrating them. As far as the swing goes I think the less traction provided by soft spikes promotes people to have more stable lower body motion than they might otherwise have.

Never liked them in the first place.
I still have scars on my ankles from those damned leather heels.
I can still feel those anchors that stabbed the balls of my feet.
What a relief it was to get the things off my feet and get my feet into some hot water.
I stopped wearing spikes when I saw my first pair of "teaching shoes" in the early 80s. Went right from there to "cross trainers".
Now I wear soft spikes and real golf shoes again.

Not at all. I also don't miss the greens getting torn up because of them or decks or patios at golf courses getting beaten up from them or the spikes wearing down quickly.

I used to belong to a very hilly course and while I have slipped on some extreme hilly lies, I would have slipped with or without metal spikes. Courses I play now I never slip.

I assume that the metal spikes are heavier than plastic spikes. If that is true, then I am pleased to have the lighter rather than the heavier weight on my feet: anything to lessen the load.

Its not the size of your spike, its the motion of the ocean.....lol But seriously I liked the way they stuck your feet in place but course conditions are many times better. Plus if you had a really bad lie you could hurt yourself with steel spikes cuz your feet would absolutely not give......lol....lots of twisted ankles.

I don't miss them at all when it comes to spike marks around the hole.

I do sort of miss the sound they made a little bit when walking on concrete. I don't miss the twisted ankles (I broke mine once) and the oh so close slides that happened when stepping off grass on to a downhill bit of concrete cart path in metal spikes. That was dangerous.

I was one of the first people to switch to soft spikes. I averaged about 36 holes a day, or 10+ rounds per week, the summer I switched.

My ankles would be sore at the end of the day with the metal spikes. With the soft spikes, they were not.

The early ones weren't as sturdy as the ones are now, and they didn't grip as well.

I don't miss metal spikes. In a decade plus I've slipped due to soft spikes maybe four times ever.

I do miss metal spikes. There are a lot of good plastic cleats out there, but I think metal spikes still have superior grip.

Tiger doesn't always wear them, nor does Phil. I believe only about 25% of the PGA Tour wears 'em, and most of them are the older guys who grew up playing them (soft spikes didn't come out and start to get popular for Tiger until he was ~ 17, and Phil ~ 24 or 25.).

Actually I forgot that I ever wore metal spikes - got my first set of Spider soft spikes in 1994 and never looked back. The increase in putting surface quality has been immeasurable IMO.

metal spikes were good for scuffing an opponent's putting line (has to be done stealthily, never got caught)

They will beat their swords into golf clubs and their spears into putters. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore. Old Tom Morris 2:4

Yeah I miss them... They had a helluva lot better grip. Just a shame all the lazy bums who dragged their feet across greens...

    • Day 116 12-6 Still working on getting to lead side. Tonight I also tried some skill work with clubface awareness.  Hit foam balls.
    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
