I always played forgings. But with pretty bad arthritis and me never knowing which swing will show up, it was time to get game improvement irons. I didnt bother getting fit for the same reason, too inconsistent in swing speed and path day to day.. Last two times I got fit, it was a good day and they wanted to put me in stiff shafts. Stiff wont work for me on bad days, I'd barely get a 5 iron off the ground.  Kid and I went to  Carl's Golf Land today and we hit clubs. Lots of clubs. T200's, T300's,  Both Apex cavities, Mizzy JPX series. Srixon, you name it, if there is a name brand game improvement iron out there, we hit it. Came down to the Mizuno Hot Metal Pro and the T300. I ended up with the T300's because the long irons were a lot easier to hit, and I didnt get as many jumpers, shots that went unexpectedly 15 yards long. The Mizunos appealed to my eye better, but the T300's were easier to play knockdowns and were more willing to work with control either way.  Hit the course. Scored like crap, need to learn my distances on these monsters. I think I'll drop the 48 degree wedge and put my 50 degree Vokey back in, it's a money club for me.  The 4 iron is a beast off the tee., I was carrying it 215-220. May have to keep the 4 and drop the 5 for my M6 6 wood I fell in love with for its versatility. Got a pretty damn good deal too, 4-pw + 48degree wedge for $920.00.... That was a lot less money that most of the other clubs we tried, not all (I.E. Callaway Mavric was a lot less, felt fantastic, but was just too long for me, I'd need 6 wedges...........

6-wood? Don’t you mean 9-wood?

I tested the T300 irons, didn’t really care for them. Thought they were too long for me.

You didn’t try the Mavrik Pro? The lofts are almost the same as the T300s.

Yes, I meant 9 wood. I tried the Mavriks, they were both very long. And I just couldnt deal with the colors on the cavity insert. Same with the Taylormade Sims. Just too gaudy for my concervative old man taste.

    • My flop shots are 6-7° down (AoA). Does that answer it? 😄  The longer answer is… You have to be able to do both shots.
    • I hope you don't mind me raising this one from the dead. I got shortgamechef's video access thing for a few months in 2024. I watched his yip fix videos (the general gist is similar to the first video above, but with a lot more detail) and it made a lot of sense. I was working on it in my backyard off a mat for a while and my yippy thing was mostly gone. Aside from anything else, the flop shot using that technique is so easy and controllable. But I got onto a golf course for the first time of the year and found myself by the green on a downslope with the ball sitting down a little in the rough and I was, not to put too fine a point on it, f***ed. Shallow is all well and good from a good flat lie and I understand it, but you can't make that your be all and end all. I still don't know if it's a good idea to use steep all the time or just when you need to. I have a hard enough time with one technique, let alone too.  Just got a pitching skillest lesson with Erik and unless I misunderstood things some, he wants me a bit steeper. @iacas - where do you fall on the steep vs shallow argument and how do you vary it according to need?
