Going to destin in August.  Played Kelly's plantation last summer looking at emerald bay or Regatta Bay Golf & Yacht Club. Anyone have played the 2 or somewhere else thats worth checking out?

I've always felt like Destin is an out-of-the-way type of place. Most of the FL people we get here are Tampa, Orlando, even Miami… Jacksonville sometimes.

But Destin has a good amount of golf. I wonder if the age is just bad for likelihood of going online to talk about golf?

Well we go to destin every yr for the beach. And since I'm here figure it's worth playing somewhere new. But totally get your point

I live in Tallahassee. Playing Windswept Dunes this Friday. It's in Freeport, north of Santa Rosa Beach. Will give a report after I play, but it is supposed to be spectacular. The only courses I have played in Destin are Kelly Plantation and The Links Golf Club at Sandestin. The Links course was fun. Short and a ton of water.

I've also only played Kelly and The Links Sandestin.  Both were a lot of fun.  Kelly was my favorite.  Sandestin maybe a little too tight and too many houses in danger of my tee shots. 🙂

Regatta Bay is on my list to play next. Don't think you can go wrong with that choice.

Links Sandestin was tight. Luckily my 4-hybrid was flying straight off the tee that day. I think I hit driver on only 2 holes.

We stay in the Santa Rosa Beach / Blue Mountain Beach area just about every year (save the occasional switch to Hilton Head Island...which we did again this year).  Windswept in Freeport is one of my go-to visits.  Spectacular is probably a little strong, but I do like the place.  The value is especially good since you're inland, non-resort.  I like the layout--less water-everywhere-target-golf, and more, well, 'windswept dunes'--and it's pretty open so you can be aggressive off the tee when you're playing well.  The only negatives are the drive from the beach, relative to the other area courses--and, being inland, you lose the sea breeze...so feels much hotter and the flying insects can get a little bothersome.  Take your sun screen and bug spray.

Beyond Windswept, I've probably played the Sandestin resort courses the next-most...including the Links probably most often (I can be frugal ;-) ).  It is a little tight and watery, but still a nice layout.  In spite of that, I've put up some of my better scores there, including a hole-out from ~102y a couple of years ago on one of the prettier holes on the bay.  That was a nice memory.

You guys enjoy your trips & rounds.  May the birdies be plentiful.

I am in Tallahassee also but I was born and raised in Fort Walton Beach.  I worked at the Sandestin golf courses through college.  Some of the good courses to play would be:  Kelly Plantation, Regatta Bay, Sandestin Links and Raven.

    • Got off to probably one of my best starts ever last night.   Was -1 thru 5 and finished the front 9 with a +1 (37).   The back 9 wasn't very good but we were playing speed golf to try and beat the darkness.   Ended up with 37/44 for an 81.   Still a great score for me.    My last 5-6 rounds have all contributed to my handicap index so we trending in the right direction.
    • I don't see the swing speed as any advantage or disadvantage either way. While they don't have the "WOW!" factor that some of the men have. i.e. "Did you see Rory's 380 yard drive on 17!" That kind of thing. They do, however, play the courses shorter. I think their average LPGA Tour course is like 6400 yards, compared to 7300 for the men. So when I watch it on TV it looks kinda the same. They hit driver then 8 iron, just like the men hit driver then 8 iron. I don't really care that the hole is 100 yards shorter or whatever.  Let me put it another way. If I was to watch the WNBA and then watch the NBA, I would immediately notice how much slower the players are. How much more the men play above the rim. etc... Why? Because the court is the same size. The hoop is the same height. When I watch the LPGA Tour and then watch the PGA Tour, I don't notice (as much). They hit driver then 5 iron into a par-5 just like the men do. Because the course is smaller, it looks similar. BTW - The same is true of softball vs baseball. The softball diamond is much smaller. So, the line shots look similar, there are equally as many home runs, because the field is smaller it looks pretty similar in play.  Here's where to my way of thinking, they can make some hay. If the LPGA Tour was to lead the way in terms of pace of play they may be able to add additional excitement to their game and possibly start to make some converts. I'm an idiot who has never been a sports commissioner. But it seems that when MLB noticed their games started approaching 4 hours and Major League Soccer was always done in under 2 hours. They made changes to try to improve and it seems to be working.  With the LPGA Tour it seems you either need exciting personalities or need exciting play. If they improve the pace of play issue it could add to exciting play. Again, I'm no expert but that seems like an area they could lead instead of follow. It does seem they've recognized this. So, we shall see.
