Hi Everyone,

I just purchased a set of p790s coming from a set of Steelhead XRs.  Except for less offset on the p790s, the specs are very similar (swing weight, lie angle, loft, etc).  I hit the 7 iron in the store and it felt amazing.  It wasn't longer than my XR 7 (XR 7 iron is .5 degrees stronger), but it just felt better.  It felt easier to hit.  I picked the p790s with the stiff shaft and out the door I went. I went straight to the driving range and started with the same 7 iron and it was just as good as in the bay at the store.  PW-7 felt pretty good. As soon as I got to the 6 iron, my results were very inconsistent and I began to doubt my selection.  I hit my XR 6 and 5 irons pretty well so the only thing I could think of that was causing this inconsistency was the difference in offset.  As an example, the XR 5 iron is at about 4.6mm and the p790 is about 3.1.  The difference is clearly visible at address.

I came home and started researching how to manage this difference in offset and what I've found is that with lower offset clubs, you have keep your hands a little forward at address to replicate what a higher offset inherently does.  My question is beside hands a little more forward, is there any other consideration when swinging a lower offset iron?  Nearly every shot with the p790 5 and 6 were off the toe.  No matter how much I focused on hitting more on the center of the face, each shot pretty much came off the toe.  I just bought these and I have to tinker to see what works, but I wanted to check in you guys to see what you thought.

A couple of notes. I didn't get properly fitted (I know I probably should have).  Why did I want new clubs if I hit my XRs so well?  The head of my XR 5, 7 and 8 iron snapped off this season (two at the range and one while playing).  I spend a lot of time at the range and I suspect that's what caused this (mats on concrete), but I feel like the quality of the XRs is so poor and I wanted something better.

Thanks!

Danny

Danny... go with a mixed set.  5 and 6 iron XRs, and 7-PW with the new irons.  One should always play the best set possible, not necessarily the entire set they just paid good money for.  A lot of pros and amateurs play a mixed set of irons.  You won't be alone.

That's an interesting thought. I've never even considered that. Thx!

I guess I'd like to figure out what I'm doing wrong with the new clubs and improve if I can.

Sure.  Do that first.  But don't concoct a swing to fit the clubs.  The clubs should fit your swing.

Telling you hit “down” on the ball is out😂.

Are the new clubs longer in length?  How about the weight and swingweight?  You’re used to the feel swinging the xr’s.  I think you might need to get used to the feel with the 790s.  They are great clubs!!

Tey just using the same hand position and set up you used with the xr’s.  Give it some time

Hey Typhoon. The clubs get a little longer as they go from 6-4 compared to the XRs. Everything else is pretty much the same. See the attached.  Thx for the advice.
