Hello all, just started playing after 20yrs away. Newbie question: what does the term “square with the card” mean? I’m currently on 24 HC.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to TST.   We're glad you've joined.

I'll admit, I've not heard that phrase in reference to golf unless you are referring to paying with a credit card that using the Square scanner.   I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will chime in soon.

Again, welcome to TST!

Does it mean if you square the score on your card it should come in under 10,000?  Seriously, I have not heard that term.  Now, "squaring your clubface"... that's something you should get familiar with.  Welcome aboard.

I imagine it might mean you're even par? Or that you've gotten as many birdies or better as bogeys or worse?

A quick Google search confirms this. Unfortunately @Ian389 , it is unlikely you will be square with the card anytime soon. Join the club.

Which was it?

The match play or the stroke play version?

Square with the card means even par in medal (stroke) play.

You can be square in match play, but that is regarding the match against your opponent, not how you're scoring. You could be "all square" and 50 over par when the match is even.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

Typically playing stableford in Australia; I had a partner playing off 20 HC say that he finished “square with the card”.

I assumed this was because he ended up with 36 points i.e scored 2 points per hole.

Cheers!

"Even 2s" would be  a more conventional way of putting it.

If a 10 handicapper said he was square on the front 9, I would assume he meant even par - probably 22 or 23 points for the 9.

If a +4 player said he finished square, I'd assume he meant 4 over his handicap, even par, not 4 under.

I assume in tnis instance it means shooting your handicap, so 36 stableford points or level par nett.

    • I agree. I would have thought it would save them shipping costs. I will say, I don't really mind. I'm guessing the labor cost to remove the head and repack it is greater than the difference in shipping costs. I'm guessing Callaway has a deal with UPS because the shipping label they sent me only showed a cost of like 8 bucks and change. Feels like it would have costed me more to ship it.  When the guy I spoke to told me they were sending me a complete driver and I could choose to keep my old shaft or keep the new one, I was actually kind of excited. It was like a little driver shaft lottery. ... I didn't win though. The shaft I got was almost the same as the one I had just the R version instead of the S version. Mine's a 60 gram Hzrdus Black.  The other thing I kind of liked about it is that they shipped it the same day I talked to the guy. So it was fast.  Lastly, I'm pretty sure the guy I talked to was in California, and the driver definitely shipped to me out of Texas. That's also where I sent it back to.  So, overall, really I have no complaints.

    • That’s the dumbest thing I ever heard… they only have complete clubs…. They couldn’t have unscrewed it like you did???  Wow…right?
