I am looking seriously at the AP2's as from hitting them and reading a bunch I feel they are as close to a straight player club that will still give some decent forgiveness.

Would anyone who has hit them put the AP1 and G10 on the same level as far as workability and forgiveness. I felt as thought the AP1's were somewhere between the G10 and AP2. Thoughts??

the G10, AP2, and AP1 are all for different target audiences. I have hit all and will rank them as I experienced.

Forgiveness 1 Pings 2 AP1 3 AP2
Workability 1 AP2 2 AP1 3 Pings
Distance - 1 AP1 2 Pings 3 AP2

The AP2 were most like a players club. The AP1 and G10 were generally in the same Game Improvement category, but I think the AP1 was closer to a players iron and the G10 was closer to Super GI. The Ping had a much wider sole and deeper cavity, and a thicker top line. Also, mis hits were much more identifiable on the AP1.

They are all totally different clubs, in my experience.

Thanks for the input. Im overthinking this for sure but I am just curious. After coming back from a couple year lay off I am about an 18 handicap. Over the next year I should get it down to where I use to play at a 9-10. I dont know if I would be better off buying the AP2' right now and letting my swing and game come to them or buy say the AP1's that are inbetween game improvement and a players club, then update my clubs again i na year when everything gets rolling.

If you like the feel of the G10's, the i10's are more of a "players" club from appearence.

Both are game improvement from the standard of the size of the sole and the cavity back, but you cant beat the way anything feels in your own hands.

If you're sticking to those, go with the AP2's. There are other's out there though. If you're considering the AP2's you should consider the i10's as well. The Cobra CB's are also in that arena. Nike Pro Combo Tours would also compete well with those...

I looked and hit the I10's. To me they seemed to fall more inline with the AP1's. I really cant make up my mind between the AP1's and 2's. Do I buy a club I can get a little more forgiveness from while I get my groove back? OR buy the clubs I will need in a year and let my swing come to them? Does that even make sense?

Where do you lose most of your strokes because you can have the ball striking of a 2 handicap but the putting of a 40 handicap.

It does make sense, but if you get clubs that you arent capable of handling you arent going to have a great deal of fun while your playing out on the course.

If it were me though I would get the AP2 irons, and become a range rat to see how much I am going to have to adjust to accommodate these irons. Good luck though. Toughest choice in golf is which irons to drop nearly a G-note on. And if your like me and replaced your entire bag, its about $2600-3000. Great Game though, right?

That what concerns me. If I get the AP2's and I have a bit of trouble hitting them I worry about a sense of frustration affecting my "come back". That could create bad swing habits.

While the top line of the 1's is a little..very little bulkier the sole seemed to stay more in line with a players club. Jeez!

If you're committed to improving, though, it's not so much about fun in the short term. I've always been a fan of getting "tougher to hit irons" or at least irons that transmit a good amount of feedback.

More likely tougher to hit irons would create good swing habits. My swing goes haywire when I have to play with "more forgiving" clubs for more than a few rounds.

100% agreement. Too many folks look for easy short-cuts, I think.

Since putting a few individual blade irons (3, 6, 7 and 8 - Titleist 690.MB, 695.MB, Nike Forged ) into my existing setup of Mizuno MX-19 , I find that I try and hit my tee-shots to a distance just so I can use the blades for the approaches.

I understand your predicament. One thing I am considering right now is to split a set between AP1 for the longer irons 3.4.5 and AP2 for the rest thru 9 I prefer the wedges I have. I may have to adjust some lofts by a degree or so on the order but it may not be necessary. I could use the forgiveness in the longer clubs.

I spent serious time hitting R7TP, i10, AP1, and AP2 in a variety of conditions and honestly the AP2 just turned me on more than any of the others with respect to its performance and feel. Accuracy and feedback was excellent. Anyone looking for a new set of irons should check out the AP2s and/or AP1s depending on your game. If you don't and you hit them after the fact you may start kicking yourself in the pants!

Might be tough to do - watch the shafts, too. Don't pay too much attention to lofts - centers of gravity vary a bit, too.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
