Beg to differ. Everyone will get over it with all the really important things that are happening in the world right now.

Beg to differ back. Comedians will still be making jokes about this in 20 years.

It’s a massive moment in pop-culture history.

Well the fact the spineless academy let him sit there and enjoy his evening and get a major award despite assaulting a presenter shows their teeth.

In no way they could have been prepared for anything like this. It was so surreal, people are still trying to process it. I know I am. And it seems worse now than it did yesterday or day before.

It's not over at all for them. I don't see how they have a choice.

The Academy now claims they actually asked Will to beat it, but he apparently told them to kick rocks.

Smith could be kicked out of the Academy, suspended, etc.

Nah. Maybe a short suspension at most. He’ll give an all too familiar apology to the Academy, written, and they’ll announce how genuine it was and how WS is looking forward to growing and learning.

I just can’t get over the fact that he wasn’t escorted off of the property.  If I would have slapped one of you guys like that at an awards ceremony, I’m pretty sure I would have have an unfriendly escort out the door.

You mean like they’ve handled streakers? Protesters? This wasn’t a massive fire or a bombing. It was one man slapping another man on stage. You are being silly if you don’t think the friggin Oscars has no idea what to do with an unruly participant. The problem was they were too afraid of what backlash they would get had they tried to intervene. And that’s a shame we’ve come to that.

Tell me exactly how could they have stopped CR from getting smacked. Unruly participants from the bleachers are not front row top Hollywood brass who are more like house guests with no real physical separation to the stage so don't give me BS examples.

Even if they had security by the stage, who could have predicted WS was approaching CR to lay hand on him? For all anyone could tell he got up there to congratulate CR for being the funniest comedian of the century.

It just doesn't friggin happen. There is nothing they could have done to prevent this. They shouldn't have to. That's why they all sit at shared tables.

You know, people trust their guests to behave. That's why they are invited and seated at arms length. And if you are saying they should have thrown out WS after the fact, big whoop. Damage already done.

I never said they could’ve or should’ve stopped it from happening. Not once. Just listen to yourself. You honestly think the best course of action was…to do nothing? Oh, they asked him to leave and he said no. Oh, oh, ok well we tried. Come on. And let’s not forget the big picture. It’s a f****** awards show. So there’s an interruption. Big f’in deal. Handle the situation. Erik is right in that it’s a big moment in pop culture. But do you think it’s a bigger issue than the war? Than Covid? Just stop. They botched the situation, which they’ve admitted to. How they did nothing is less of an issue than why.

@Vinsk, where is that even coming from?

They could have asked him to leave, and they did.

I take issue with the fact that he got a standing ovation, too, but that's on the entire audience, not the Academy themselves.

Do I think this is bigger than the war?? COVID?? Ha ha ha ..Grabbing at straws now.

They asked him to leave didn't they? Anything more and they risk putting themselves on the wrong side of racial history in that moment. The narrative would be completely different. Then 'The Slap' would become the secondary story. Yeah, no, they are too self serving and clever to make a martyr out of WS by voluntarily putting themselves firmly in the middle of the cross hair.

And now that the public jury has passed judgement on who the chump is, they will safely 'prosecute' WS with the public behind them.

They have teeth. They are more interested in a self serving narrative.

This.  This just goes to show how our society reacts when they don’t want to confront someone for their actions.  Most people would rather sit back and pretend it didn’t happen so that we can get on with the show and be a part of the “happy” pieces of the broadcast.  It doesn’t matter to them that he lashed out inappropriately, just so long as they are seen supporting his amazing 🙄award reception.

This. Do you see the problem here. It’s ridiculous. WS assaulted another person on stage. Period. What if a total nobody ran to the stage and slapped Rock. Would nothing had been done? Of course not. The Academy clearly showed the privilege that exists amongst the elite.

It’s a reminder this is a stupid awards show for the elite and rich. The Oscars could be canceled and it would be missed for about a week.

Ummm, of course there's a difference between a random seat-filler and someone who was up for an award later in the show.

Just as there are differences in almost any situation in life. If a kid hits me during a lesson in the middle of a tantrum, he's treated differently than if an adult throws a tantrum and hits me. Or if the hitting was accidental. Or depending on how hard he hit me.

What's your point? That Will Smith was treated differently? Well DUH. So again… what's your point?

    • The highlights as I see them: Championship and Challenger Series The creation of the PGA Tour and the PGB Tour, in the words of Joel Dahmen a few years ago. They're calling them the Championship Series (23-24 events) and the Challenger Series (20+ events). Both run February to August. They feel this will achieve three things: increasing the consistency and quality of fields across the season creating a clear system for players to earn and retain status and delivering a more structured and competitive experience for fans and partners—all in an effort to strengthen meritocracy. Championship Series Structure and Eligibility The 23-24 events includes the Players, majors, season-ending events, and the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. These will be 72-hole events with a 36-hole cut to the top 65 and ties and purses of $20M+. 120 players without an alternate list. 90 players (roughly) from the previous year and 20 players promoted from the Challenger Series. Full eligibility will be finalized later this year. Sites (cities) to be finalized soon, but 10 of the 15 courses have already been determined. Postseason: includes retention and relegation and concludes with match play. The Tour Championship will also be played across a rotation of prestigious courses. Challenger Series Structure and Eligibility 20+ events. Running concurrently. Will feature players fighting their way back to the Championship Series or players graduating and on the upswing from the Korn Ferry Tour. Many of these events will be current PGA Tour courses. About 7 of the Challenger Series events will be during off weeks for the Championship Series with elevated purses and visibility. Purses of at least $4M, with cuts similar to the Champ series. 144 player fields. Competitive Fields for Both Series Players will be eligible for only one series at a time: Championship Series Players are not eligible for Challenger Series events. Championship Series members will have a known schedule with all events having the same eligibility. Players and Majors will have their own eligibility criteria. Championship Series players don't have to play all events. This begs the question about, say, the Canadian Open, and other "home-town" events that players might want to play, even if they're Challenger Series events. Will releases be granted? Promotion and Relegation At least 90 players will be retained in the Championship Series, and 20 players will be promoted from the Challenger Series each year. Battlefield promotion for two-time winners from the Challenger Series. Players relegated from the Championship Series will have a "last chance" opportunity to retain status, or will go to the Challenger Series. Criteria will be finalized before the start of the 2027 season. Points System New points system (not FedExCup points). Separate points systems for the Championship and Challenger Series. Elevated points in the Challenger Series for off-weeks on the Championship Series. More details tk. Elevated International Events in the Fall The fall schedule will include a limited series of elevated international events with top players from the Championship Series, with the intent to deliver in partnership with the DP World Tour as part of the Strategic Alliance. Last Chance Series The Tour will develop a “last chance” series of 4-6 events in the fall, with a limited number of spots on the Championship Series available for top finishers. Eligibility will include players relegated from the Championship Series, Challenger Series players, and other categories to be determined. Q-School continues, as do the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Also, Brian Rolapp is the new commissioner as of January 1, 2027.
