At times, when I chip I will slice the ball. I guess it's a slice - it just goes hard right. I don't know the proper term for the direction. I don't think I am coming out of my swing/pulling up early b/c I have focused on staying down/in my swing and it still happens. Someone recently mentioned it might be my clubface opening - this only happens with my 54, 58, 60 wedges - nothing else. If you have had this or know what it might be to remedy it, I'd appreciate it.

I don't always do this, I'll have entire rounds (2 or 3 in a row, even) where it doesn't come up, but once I do this it seems to be more and more frequent.

****ing annoying, b/c it can ruin a round. I have a pretty nice touch around the green, or at least sometimes I do, but this kills it.

There's two possibilities--you're leaving the clubface really open, or I think you're shanking the chip.

Shanking is caused when the ball hits the hosel of the club, causing it to shoot out to the right. It's the opposite of hitting the ball off the toe. Every now and then I get the shanks--I cure this by making a swing with the iron perpendicular to a 2x4. That way, I don't want to hit the 2x4, so I keep the club away from the 2x4. You can use anything that's long and straight--cardboard boxes work just as well. Something like this:

lamebum - thanks man, but I'm 995 sure I'm not hitting it off the hosel - i think it's the clubface flying open. how or why this happens, I don;t know

the 2x4 or laying a club down will work wonders, great tip.

I usually try to keep the clubface closed and swing at 50 to 60 percent, with a limited backswing and follow through, they will go straight.

Posted this is another thread, i think this might be the answer

Ive had the same problem before too and still sometimes have it, Its the exact same situation too im chipping good then all a sudden, do they go directly right like a huge shank?

I realized my problem was that Im afriad and losing confidence in my chip and i stop Accelerating through the ball as soon as I hit it and the club stops dead. Another thing Is because I stop and my body is still moving, my hips fly out towards the target and that opens the clubface to create the huge shank.

Just remember and try and keep accelerating through the ball if this is the problem and have confidence in the shot. Part of this problem is mental.

I agree with what Dent posted, I have a remedy that you might try. Focus on the FRONT of the ball as if that is where you are going to make contact. This can have dramatic results. Then once you get your confidence you can trust your shot. Another remedy is to take the club head back very low even pressing the grass and then sweep through. One more bit of advice, let the left hand/arm do the work, grip lightly with the right.

Sounds like a de-acceleration and/or angle of takeaway/approach issue. Make sure you are keeping your head down too.

I agree with ShotCaLLa. It is really hard to "slice" a ball with a high lofted club, unless you're coming really over the top.
