Given that I wanted to play some golf with the 735s I just got, I decided two days ago to put an entirely different set of clubs in my bag. In fact, I actually just took a different bag... but here's what I had in it:

Driver: MacTec NVG, 9.5 degrees, Stiff shaft
3-Wood: TaylorMade r7 FW, 15 degrees, Stiff shaft
Hybrid: Titleist 503.H, 19 degrees, Stiff shaft
Irons: Titleist 735, DG S300 (Vokey Oil Can wedges 254.10, 260.04)
Putter: Titleist/Cameron Futura Phantom Mallet

MacTec NVG
The sound wasn't as bad as I'd remembered. What continues to bother me about this club is the shaft and the high torque. It's also pretty darn whippy for a stiff. I know whippiness is in no way a scientific measure of anything, but suffice to say I never found the right rhythm and even the drives I pounded didn't get out as far as I'd have liked. The high torque meant that any shot towards the toe went way right. I give this one a C+.

TaylorMade r7 FW
A review of this is coming up on the site soon (after I get the Dual Rescue review done!), but the long and the short of it is this: it's long and not very short. I hit a 3W off #8 today that went further than some of the drivers I've hit there. The ball launches very high, and you'd think hitting a shot into the wind would be tough, but the spin is very low and shots don't balloon, they just kind of float through the wind. The downside? It's not as good at getting the ball up off the fairway nearly as well as the 904. But off the tee, why, this one's tough to beat, and if you catch it clearly off the fairway, it goes quite a ways.

Titleist 735 Irons
Bear in mind I only hit a few iron shots: PW approach to the first hole, punched 5I to the second, 7I to the third, 5I to the fourth, 9I to the fifth and sixth, hybrid to the 7th, PW and PW to the last two. So, I really didn't get to test them all out, but I was surprised at how low (and how much spin) the wedges produced. These clubs were not longer than my 680s (though again, I really only hit a few shots that weren't wedges). The fatter topline was a tad distracting at first - I've always been a fan of a real thin topline for whatever reason - but these clubs swing pretty smoothly and look awesome doing it. I'll know more after I've actually hit them more than once apiece (or six times or whatever for the wedge). But I can already tell you: Dave will like them!

TaylorMade r7 FW

Interesting...especially about the high launch angle and low spin. I might have to demo one of these clubs. I hit my Dad's 904 and liked it. My Callaway 3-Wood is the oldest club in my bag and it may need to be replaced soon.

Titleist 735 Irons

I don't doubt that.

I'm looking forward to getting my hands on them.

Fairways and Greens.

I still like the 904 a little more, by just the slimmest of margins. If you do want the r7 FW wood, I have a brand new one still in the bag for you. I'll bring it down... retail is pretty high on these, but you can have the insider price. Whatever that is.

$1 per shot rental fee.

Believe me, the high is worth the price.

    • Day 51 (29 Apr 26) - Worked with a few of the golf team kids plus my grandson (he’s too young for the team as it’s middle-high school age and he’ll be 10 Sat).  He put on a small hitting clinic (hitting off the same tees as the rest of the boys) - one of the older kids called him a “coach”.  Worked in a few shots for myself - had the light bag: driver, 7w, 4 - 6 - 8 - Pw - Sw (DCI 962’s except the Sw a 981) and Zebra putter….got in some great tee shots, a couple of recovery and an awesome up and down for bogie: 55 yds out, hitting 4th shot due to 2nd getting tangled in limbs - see the window I need to hit for a tight spinner with the Sw - nail it to a postage letter distance from the cup for a tap in bogie….my kind of practice.
    • Day 21, April 29.  Before going to work this morning, I worked in my indoor practice room for 20 minutes.   This was entirely 6-iron shots with the usual step.  Video yesterday showed me that I'm still straightening my trail leg too much (leading to the backswing length issue I've been working to fix), so I focused on not doing that in my rehearsal swings.
    • Exactly correct.   I was absolutely certain about the penalty (none here), but the bit about where they play from can be really confusing the first time you read it.  In my big paper rule book, i used colored highlighters to make it clear.  Good thing I did, at the Cascades there's little to no cell service, so using the rules app on the phone wasnn't possible.
    • Taking a crack it, but looks pretty clear. 11.1  Ball in Motion Accidentally Hits Person or Outside Influence. a. No Penalty to Any Player If a player’s ball in motion accidentally hits any person (including the player) or outside influence: There is no penalty to any player. This is true even if the ball hits the player, the opponent or any other player or any of their caddies or equipment. Reading further down it looks like they have to play the ball as it lies. No replay from the previous spot.
    • I had an interesting one yesterday, a local qualifier for the US Senior Open, at the Cascades Course at the Homestead.  Well, first things first, the VSGA arrnged for the officials to play the Cascades on Monday at the players' practice round rate.  Its lots of fun, rather old-style (built in the 1920s).  anyway, a player missed a short putt, and (apparently embarrassed) took a step to be ready to tap the ball back in.  The ball lipped out, and hit the player's foot.  I was nearby, and they waved me over, and asked "What do we do now?"  I was pretty sure of the ruling, but asked them to wait for a few seconds while i double-checked.  I did have it correct, even though its one of the more confusing rules in the book right now.  I'll leave the correct answer out for now, in case anyone wants to guess, or research it, and post their ruling.
