Assuming you are referring to a penalty area, you are allowed to touch the ground in a penalty area per rule 17.1 b. This changed a few years ago.

He may have. In which case… see the 2019 revisions to the Rules of Golf, as Scott noted. 😄

He sure did, but that is fine since the 2019 rules revision.

A better question, should he have hit the shot instead of going to the drop zone hitting his 3rd? Maybe with the toe of a putter, but his (long-ish) putter is really appropriate for that... After Straka hit his in the bunker, going to the drop zone was probably a good call, as long as he could get it somewhat close, which he did. 👍

They posted this afterwards, although it should be noted that playing a normal chip shot should be obviously not the swing if its going to be attempted for real
