Has anyone played Torrey Pines lately? (Or any course 1.5 months before an Open?)

I'm playing Torrey Pines on Monday, and don't know what to expect. The US Open is still a month and a half away, so I don't expect Open conditions, but other than that I have no idea what to expect. Will the greens be closer to Open speed, or "regular" speed? Will the rough be insane?

Obviously someone who has played the course recently would be the best help, but info. on how courses generally prepare would be appreciated as well.

Do you have a tee time on the South Course? If you don't, then you will be playing the back nine of the North Course, which is not really in US Open condition.

The greens are fast right now, but there will be a lot of ground in repair and sprinklers going in the middle of the day. The rough is pretty high right now, but I think they're going to grow it another inch. It's a tough course, no matter what, so I think you'll have a good time.

Yep, South Course. Good luck! For extra challenge, tee off from the Open tees. :)

no matter how tough the course is, youll have tons of fun. its a great course to experience. twotacos is right. the course plays long and tough no matter what. right now the rough is long and the greens are pretty fast.

i remember the starter telling some first timers at the course to make sure they know where their ball landed in the rough or else they would lose it.

Be sure to take some photos and then come back with your score and the photos! We need more "Trip Reports" here.

Played it on April 4. The rough was impossible and, as noted above, the starter will stress that you should keep an eye on balls headed off the fairway. The greens are probably in better shape by now, but 3 weeks ago they were slow and bumpy. There was an "emergency" aeration some time in March. You'll love it.

I thought of something ... what time are you playing the course? The onshore winds are strongest in the afternoon, and pretty dead in early morning up to about 10am-1pm. The marine layer (coastal clouds) will usually burn off by noon on most days, and speed up the greens.

I was raised in San Diego and surfed a lot so I am pretty in tune with the coastal weather there, month by month. I can even probably predict the wind and sun for you on Monday. :)

Ha. We have an 8:00 tee time, and I certainly wouldn't mind if the winds were pretty calm. I plan on the course kicking my tail. I am a former 6 handicapper who didn't play for 5 years, and currently play to an 11. I think the good news is I am hitting my driver long and accurate, so hopefully I can hit a decent number of my second shots from the fairway and not the rough. Regardless, I also plan on having a blast. I'm big on photos and have done other trip reports on other forums before finding this one, so I'll plan on doing one when I get back.

    • Day 39: did top golf for an hour with the family. It was fun but also not really like real golf at all. Also did some mirror work - working on the backswing stuff mostly.
    • Day 4, 1/2/26.  Played 18 today;  didn't get a chance to warm up (had I known the range was closed, I'd have hit balls at home first).  Played okay, 92 with three balls in the water.  It was raining for more than half the round and I didn't quite appreciate before today just how much I benefit from roll on both drives and approach shots.  I did not adapt well to this change until about hole 15, which is something I have to figure out.
    • Day 143 1-2 Arch wrist in downswing. Having a SLIGHT cup in the lead wrist at the top now. Only paused swings with some rehearsals before swinging at ball.  Used foam ball.
    • Day 459 - 2026-01-02 Had two guys on GEARS Hybrid, so I hopped on afterward (I'm going to do this a lot more often now). So… I've signed myself up for another month of backswing work in two ways: A little more extension of the trail elbow (got into the upper 90s) Less pelvis turn (low 50s).
