Yesterday, our church held our annual golf tournament in memory of a great friend and parishioner who passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2012.

On the 10th hole there was a short backup, and I noticed some range balls that I could hit back on the range. A few had lies good enough to attempt the catching the ball with your hand challenge.  I had my 54* and could not quite do it.

My playing partners, 70, 71 and 79, were intrigued and we discussed trying to hit a flop shot and catching the ball. None thought they had the swing speed to do so.

The very athletic 70-year old stepped to the tee and gave the ball a mighty lash. When he did, the ball went straight up into the air, about eye-height, and dropped to the ground. If he had known where to look, he could have easily caught the ball because it was moving so slowly, almost as if he was playing catch by himself!

I wished he had.  I have seen more double eagles than I have people catch their own driver swing at full speed!

That'd leave one heck of an idiot mark.

He had two drivers. He is 5’7”, and has one 45”+ and one he told me he cut about 4” off and regripped. I never got a good look because we played from different tees. I almost thought he hit it with bottom of the club because of the slow speed it went into the air!  It was amazing!

i have seen Bryson intentionally top shots in videos, and with a wood I think his ball flight was similar, but a few yards ahead!

If he topped it and the ball bounced off the ground and up, it’s not a pop up. That’s called a Baltimore chop 😃

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
