I seem to be move my wrist away from my body at take away which is causing me to come back down without correction and causing alot of shanks etc

To myself it seems i am bowing my left wrist which seems to be causing alot of it and i dont know what to do to get round this to stop it happening

Any help would be great

Thanks in advance

As I wrote elsewhere…

You immediately get closer to the golf ball, which is generally going to move your hands and the shaft and thus the hosel closer to the ball.

01.jpg

You appear to bend forward/over more immediately when you start your backswing, so I'd try to make a few swings in your house/apartment with your head on a towel against the wall to see what it feels like for your head to move AWAY fromΒ the wall slightly (to exaggerate; I don't want your head to actually move away fromΒ the wall in an actual chip), and then incorporate that feel for awhile.

Your head doesn't have to remain completely still β€” it's still an athletic move β€” but you can't be moving it like that.

You'll see your hands also move out quite a bit. I'd investigate movingΒ the club back more with rotation (chest mostly, hips a bit) rather than your arms/hands.

There is nothing like a chip shank to really throw you off and make you feel like you have no clue when trying to hit the ball mere feet! it is so frustrating. To add to what Erik has mentioned, I practice chipping and small pitches with an alignment stick just outside the ball (better with a piece of wood) to keep my hands from getting outside the path. It has made a difference in getting consistent center of the face contact.Β

Afternoon All

I have tried all the above today and what i can see from the videos is my left wrist bowing during take away thats causing the issue with my hands being pushed out.

Is there any recommendations for training aids etc to get the feel or a way to stop my left wrist bowing during takeaway.

I have alot of big tournaments coming up and i feel i may be best to withdraw as my confidence is shattered as am just thinking of hitting the hosel or very close to it.

Thanks in advance

I'm not qualified to comment on a swing, but 1 day of working on somehting and expecting a result may be a little overly optimistic.

This hasnt been a 1 day thing its been happening over the last 2 years and i am getting to the point i just want someone to try help me to stop the bow in the left wrist. I have been and seen a top DP World Tour Short game coach and even he didnt sort the issue when i looked back at the videos.

My instructor put a 2x4 outside the ball, down the line and had me chip without hitting the board. It had an immediate result.Β

Sorry if I mis-read.  I thought you said you tried "All of the above today..."  I'll leave the swing mechanics to those who know what they are talking about, but if you really want my idea, simply put a tee above your right ear, double tie your left shoe lace then "Let it rip". 😜

I dont have a issue with doing that either as i learn to return the club back on line BUT my issue is without the wood or anything the bow will just get worse to the point where i am right now.

So cup the wrist deliberately then?

I know and its alot easier than said, Just needing some advice on best way to go about it to get the feel and position and i can do it in practice swings etc but back to square one once go to hit a ball. If that makes sense.

I am not sure its the bow that is the real issue. As @iacasΒ pointed out in the DTL your head dips and arms lift outside the line. If you look at your face on you can see the head dip and then it moves forward along with your weight. Get set up on that lead side and keep it tight with a 2x4 as a path guide.Β

That's all I got.Β

Take with a spoonful of salt here for a this feel..'Cock' the club straight up without moving the arms maybe? Almost like a bunker shot. It's probably a more identifiable feel IMO than wrist condition.

Just spitballing ideas.. this kinda stuff is easier to experiment with especially if it's driving you to frustration. Seems like you don't have a whole lot to lose.

Yes it is the way he is doing. Y'all are much better players than me so I won't bore you to death but I know this much, if you roll the leading edge down on the backswing, the tendency is to roll it up into impact. Recipe for blades and shanks. Gotta do the opposite. Oh, also will move his hands in.

That is not your biggest issue. Your hands go out because your body immediately moves toward the ball and you don't rotate your chest/hips.

Did you practice with your head feeling like it went back away from the golf ball? That your chest was the only thing moving your arms back by rotating?

Sorry for being blunt here, but you've been given the answer, and now you're talking about something entirely different.

image.jpeg

That's almost no chest, no lower body… and just arms ROLLING and pushing out in concert with the rolling.

Look at how much your head moved in that little swing and in that small amount of time.

@iacasΒ I apologise for not listening at the start. The penny dropped after reading your message and its clear as day it doesn't matter what i do BUT without rotation nothing / outcome will not change.

I went out this morning and done the shoulder / chest turn to get the feel for it and i can notice a difference already, Just need to continue to work with it.

Once again thank you.

I'm not a golf instructor but yeah that second one looks much better.Β

It looks more fluid, rhythmic, athletic, etc.Β

First one had a ton of head movement, head was moving downward even before you started the backswing.Β

Keep practicing. You can even practice that indoors on an old piece of carpet and hit a plastic ball or a piece of paper or something.Β
