Hi all, I’ve just started getting back into golf after a 10 year plus hiatus and have some brand new Callaway Diablo tour balls in the bag and was wondering is there much advantage distance wise with them compared to a newer release ball? Ive had these balls for at least 13 years and hitting on average 250m or 273 yards but know I can hit it longer. I can’t see any videos on this, any help greatly appreciated.

It’s possible newer balls could be a slight bit longer, but not dramatically longer. The golf ball has limits on design per the ruling bodies for competition. Because you haven’t played in 10 years, you may just be hitting a bit off center and that could be the distance issue.

There's a lot of conflicting information on the web about this subject.

There are those who say a golf balls performance will deteriorate over time just sitting in a box. There are as many who say yeah, it might deteriorate but only after a really really long time.

In terms of the design of the ball from 13 years ago to today's design. I'm going to suggest that most of the improvements over that time would affect the feel and possibly the green side performance, but I don't think there will be a very big difference in driver distance. I'm willing to accept others ideas on this.

One thing you could do is buy a new box of Diablo Tour Balls (Where I live they go for $25 to $35 per dozen USD). Then you could test them. That would be kind of interesting. If you decide to do so let us know how it comes out.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

I 2nd everything from @boogieliciousand @ChetlovesMer.  My "2 cents" are: 1) I'm envious, 10 years out of golf & you come back hitting it @ 273  yrads sounds like a great starting point. 2) the majority of the distance changes over the past decade + would be from advances in Club Technology and not so much from Ball Technology.  I say hit'em until you lose'em then get new balls and just not worry about it.

Just try them. Worse case use them as lake balls.  Spin characteristics of balls have gotten better, distance probably not by much as mentioned above.  Make a little YouTube video of it, you might be the next Rick Shiels, your channel name could be Harrolicious.

    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.
