You swung faster but got a lower smash factor — more of the speed went into generating spin.

You'll have to keep experimenting. The type of ball, how clean the clubface is, where you hit it exactly on the face… it all matters.

Wow glad to stumble on this post. I have often been able to hit these when I am playing a lot and had no idea why. I could always feel it off the face like it would almost feel like I hit the ball thin and the ball comes out super low and checks. When I can't hit them reliably I have thought maybe its the bounce getting involved and redirecting the attack angle which kind of makes sense.

I have had the flu recently which gave me plenty of time to pore over Joseph Mayo’s instagram. I have hit a ton of shots each day on carpet and a little started how easy this shot is to make. Key thought for me is bring the club “no closer to the earth.” That really resonated with me. If I really steepen the attack angle I can hit my 58* lob wedge barely an inch or two off the ground and a repeatable distance. I don’t recommend this but tried it to what the end ranges are for angle of descent. I actually think a 62*-64* wedge might be even better for this shot.

Played Sunday and implemented the Mayo spinner.
Hit my second shot long and left on three to a bare lie. I have seen this shot to a tucked pin but I don’t swing across it enough and hit it too far with a ton of spin but it rolled into the bunker.

I pulled my approach short and left on ten to a horrible lie with about 3’ of rise to a tucked pin maybe 5’ on the green. Ball is in a damp lie with debris behind and in front of the ball. Hit it to 3.5’ but horseshoed the putt around the right edge, which was a common miss.

I hooked my tee shot into an unplayable lie in the hazard on the left side of the par 5 16th. Hit a great recovery that rolled to about 45 yards short of the back right pin. Hit the spinner over a bumpy green that rolled just over the ridge to 3’. Sank the straight 2.5’ putt.

Felt like I had good control of these shots!
