Hi all,

I have a Forerunner 935. I bought it 5 or so years ago and the battery is starting to go and I just think there's enough advancement that it's worth getting a new watch. When I got the Forerunner it was between that and I think the S60. The forerunner basically did everything that the S60 did except for a few specific golf things. So far as I could tell those were all things that would be turned off when you put it in tournament mode anyway and the forerunner had other non-golf stuff that was better.

What I'm trying to find out now is if the same thing is true. The S70 has some better golf specific things it does, but I think many of them (like the virtual caddie and pinpointer functions) are not legal for tournament play, which is all I really care about anyway. Is there much that the S70 does that the other two don't do that would be usable in tournaments? The Epix looks like it does a lot of what the S70 does, but it is a couple of hundred dollars more expensive. There's also the Forerunner 965, which is cheaper than the S70, but so far as I can tell doesn't have the specific targeting that you can get on the S70.

I want to get the best of all worlds - something that's going to be suitable to wear all the time, has the golf features that I want and will keep decent track of workouts and general health, while not costing an arm and a leg. Does anyone have one of these and can share thoughts? There are plenty of youtube reviews around, but they don't seem to cover the tournament allowed features, which is most important to me.

A couple of years back a friend was selling his Garmin watch and I trialed it for a couple of rounds to see whether I wanted it.  I found a minimal difference between that and using my Apple watch along with free golf apps on my iPhone.  I doubt watches are much better than the golf apps currently available.  Just check out this option before buying another watch.

What's in the bag

I had a Garmin S62. It was a really nice piece of hardware to use on course, in fact I would say it was the best golf watch I have ever used. I did not like the Garmin Golf app or the way the stat tracking worked compared to my previous ShotScope. I've since switched back to ShotScope simply for the statistics/shot tracking. If I wasn't interested in statistics and shot tracking, I'd still have the S62.

I know for the S62 I could turn off the features that are not legal in tournaments. I didn't particularly care for these features anyways, so I left them turned off all the time.

Garmin also put some thought into the design so it was nice as an everyday watch as well, but I switched to an Apple watch for that.

    • Day 430 - 2025-12-04 Slow motion backswings (with chippy shots) with AlmostGolf balls.
    • Day 24 (4 Dec 25) - Spent about an hour working with the new 55° wedge in the backyard.  Kept all shots to under 20yds.  Big focus - not decelerating thru downswing and keeping speed up with abbreviated backswing.  Nothing like hitting a low flighted chip with plenty of check spin and then purpose to float a pitch of similar distance.
    • Day 114 12-4 Put some work in on backswing, moving the hips correctly, then feeling over to lead side. Didn't hit any balls was just focused on keeping flowy and moving better. I'll probably do another session tonight and add in some foam balls.
    • Didn't say anything about your understanding in my post.  Well, if you are not insisting on alignment with logic of the WHS, then no.  Try me/us. What do you want from us then?? You are not making sense. You come here and post in an open forum, question a system that is constructed with logic, without using any of your own and then give us a small window of your personal experience to support your narrative which at first sight does not makes sense.  I mean, if you are a point of swearing then I would suggest you cut your losses and humor a more gullible audience elsewhere. Good heavens.
