Batter's Box - a Simple Game for 3 or 4

Yesterday I came up with a game we could play where it was competitive without being quite so head-to-head. You can play it net or gross, of course, or 50% handicap net, or whatever you think is fair…

On the first hole, spin a tee and assign holes 1-3 or holes 1-4 to everyone in your group. If Natalie is hole 1, Erik is hole 2, and Pete is hole 3… and the order repeats throughout the round (so Natalie is 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, and 16). Those are your "scoring" holes. If you have a foursome, the last two holes are set aside as "free-for-all" holes.

On your scoring holes…

  • Eagle - 4 points
  • Birdie - 2 points
  • Par - 1 point
  • Bogey - 0 points
  • Double or worse - Lose all points accumulated thus far.

If the points are a dollar, you can win a dollar if you par (or net par) your hole. If you play your holes at par (1), par (1), birdie (2), bogey (0), bogey (0), you've won four points. The other two players owe you $4 or whatever.

If you have a foursome, the last two holes are free-for-alls: you can award points to anyone achieving those two scores. You could also play holes 1-15 in a threesome with the last three holes being free-for-alls.

In addition, you can play that any time someone makes a birdie or an eagle, they get the points above, even if it's not on their hole.

If I had to come up with a name, I'd call it like "Batter's Box" or "On Stage" because at various times, different people are "up."

Anyway, just a thought on how you could have a game where you're not actually playing against other people as much as playing with them, but where you can still take some money off of your buddies by your good play.

    • It’s been a while since I’ve seen the word “golf” and the phrase “moment of truth” collide in the same sentence.
    • I used to have a 21 degree Ping 7 wood, but it spun a lot and tended to come up short if there was any headwind or quartering wind.  Replaced it with a 20* Adams Idea Pro Tour Prototype.  Great hybrid and there are still some out there on eBay for decent prices (I think Langer still bags two of them).
    • Wins the week before and files for divorce the same week. I’m not putting money on Rory.
    • Partial to the Golf Pride CP2 Pro.  Softer than a Tour Velvet and pretty durable (I play 5 times a week and they last a year or more with no issues).
    • Tiger Wood's Driver Clinic Got this on Twitter. Which then I found the video above.  Tiger asking Rory to hit that control cut. Rory talks a bit about how he likes to stand taller, so he doesn't feel like he can shallow it with the body. Tiger puts it in his words, staying on top of the ball. Which I presume for Tiger his feel for a cut. Even the PGA Tour players have their own ways to achieve similar shots and describe it with their own swing thoughts (feels). Good insight in how PGA Tour player's develop swing feels to produce the shot they want. Could be something as simple as a posture change.
