Zach Johnson said that the only way the 10 handicap amateur can play the us open is to hit every shot with a 5 iron up the middle ( golf digest 2008 us open preview)

I'm going to try this on my favorite muni. Every shot up to 100 yards, I'm going to hit with my 6 iron ( 99 % straight, about 150 yards). After that, it'll be with the pitch, lob or putter.

I'll post the scores next week.

Any one else tried this and had good results? Was it just too boring?

Yeah, a lot of pressure. Rise above it. Harness in the good energy, block out the bad. Harness energy, block bad.

I keep saying I'll play just-irons at some point, but I never do. But then again, I'm two clubs down on you for distance at the moment, so even irons-only from the red tees would be tough for me.

Then again, if the goal is to break 100 at the U.S. Open Torrey Pines setup, 9 bogeys + 9 double bogeys = 98 or 99 (I think one of the par-5s is being played as a par-4). And I doubt there are too many people for whom two 5-irons don't go as far as a good driver shot, and probably more accurately. So, if you're a 10-handicap, I bet you're good enough with your short game that following a "good drive" (two 5-irons), you could make "par" (bogey) or at worst "bogey" (double bogey).

But... do we know that this guy's only goal is to break 100?

That having been said, I think ZJ's right on this, based on what you've said. I didn't get to that part of the magazine yet.

If you can chip and putt, go for it.
If you can't, you probably shouldn't bother.

On my last outing I had two 3 putts, ten 2 putts, and six 1 putts. I also, had 5 good close chips.

This two six iron theory might help me lower my score. Lets see...

Very interesting - I'm going to try this with a 4 iron - i reckon I can reach every par 4 with a 4 iron and either another 4 iron or less for next shot at my home course. I kinda need to be going for every par 4 in 2 playing off 5.

I know a guy who played off scratch and didn't use anything above a 3-iron. Holds a course record. He uses woods now, plays off 2, but he's nearly 60.

Think i'll prep my Ping Moon Lite bag for a game next week - 4,6,7,8,9,P,S,putter. My usual 7 club compliment is Driver, 4, 6, 8, P, S, putter.

Post your results Mr. 20, be interesting to see how you get on.

    • I’m thinking maybe Jason Day read my post. He’s sitting a -3 two off Rory and Burns.
    • Is it only the weekend broadcasts that have a low commercial count?  I feel like it has been a long while since I last watched a Thursday of the Masters, so maybe my recollection is off.  I feel today has a lot more than four minutes per hour of commercials, and far fewer of the fun stories they tell during the Sunday broadcast.
    • I mean, I do slide my hips like 7 inches towards the target before impact. PGA Tour average is like 3 inches. I’m not Scottie Scheffler who can get away with it. 🤣 He slides a ton.  For me, I have to feel like I basically just turn. Though, I’m probably over exaggerating a bit with that one video because I’m really trying to push off with the left leg which sends the hip backwards. Ideally, I would be able to get my weight over to the outside of my left foot at impact and into the finish. It’s probably OK that I can slide about 7 inches as long as it’s like only three by impact.
    • Day 32 (9 Apr 26) - Grandson is on spring break- puts in to play 9 at our home course.  Used it to work on top of horizon target point for drives and approaches…i.e. pick landing zone (fairway, green) , an intermediate target point and finally what standout feature do I want to hit “over” on the horizon (tall pine, home top, flag pole).    Better l-r dispersion w/5 of 7 drives in the short grass.  Nice little addition to the pre-shot routine.
    • I managed to get the full afternoon to watch (Pacific time, so the ESPN broadcast began at noon).  I just saw the first shot I feel like commenting on:  Adam Scott's tee shot on #16 was really good, especially after having what might be the worst kind of Maltese Falcon on #15.    I didn't used to like him, but the past few years he's grown on me quite a bit.
