Saw an ad for this in a golf magazine a little while ago. Seems like a really solid concept, it's just a matter of how well they pull it off. Have any of the insiders had a chance to try one of these out? Seems like a great little device.

http://www.uprogps.com/ They have a cool demo that shows some of the stuff it can do. I'm seriously considering this device. The only drawback is that they are very new, and only have about 50% of the courses in my area mapped. But about 80% of the courses I play regularly are mapped.

Can't say I'm a huge fan of the pricing... From $3.33 to $10 a course. I know they talk about the whole no subscription thing, but realistically $30 a year for my SkyCaddie is probably the second cheapest annual golf expense I have right above tees. I've played 5 courses in the last 2 weeks. If you play the same couple of courses most of the time it seems like a better deal, but not for me. At that point if you play the course that often I'm not sure the overhead views would be all that helpful, would think you would know the course well enough at that point. Looks cool, the overhead views are nice, but just not appropriate for my uses.

I find it interesting that on their site, they give estimated dates on when certain courses will be mapped. My course is supposed to be mapped in 2009

I wonder how accurate the date estimates are though.

The bottom price for a pro course is $2.40, but you have to buy 150 credits ($120) to get that rate (a Pro course is 3 credits).

It makes sense for me. I play about 15 different courses on a regular basis, and I did the math. At $4 per course (if you buy 20 courses, that is the cost per course), that's $60. SkyCaddie subscription for my state is $30 per year. I would end up being even in 2 years. The more years go by, the better it is, but of course its not perfect since with SkyCaddie I would get all the courses in the state for any year that I paid the fee. The other thing to think about is that as the years go by, new devices will be available, and you will always have the courses you have paid for. I happen to really like the overhead views (the flyover is really just eye candy, not very useful). I always buy a yardage book when one is available, because I like to see the hole from overhead. So the aerial views are really good for me. The yardages and your location are marked right on the arial/satellite view. And I should note that in many cases a yardage book is just as expensive as a uPro course purchase.

I think they are behind schedule. There are several courses in my area that were scheduled to be mapped in May or June of 2008, but are not yet available.

However, you have to choose a "home course", and if its not mapped, they give you a guarantee that it will be mapped in 4 business days.
