i tried a search first i promise!

I am looking for a really really good book (because i'm only going to buy one)

most important is teaching me correct swing and setup principles- as well as advanced tips like different chip shots- how to work the ball etc.

also would like a book that teaches golf rules. i want to learn it all and not just trust my friends anymore

please give me your best advice and thanks

Another vote for Hogan. I'm getting back into the game and have recently dusted off my copy of the "5 Lessons".

My first round back I thought I was regripping....all over the place with my wrist hinge.

First chapter in the Hogan book fixed my grip problems and got me back where I needed to be.

Second part of what I thought was a grip problem turned out to be related to my right foot position....another tenet in the book.....applied the lesson and it fixed my looseness at the top.

My copy is hardback. I'm gonna pick up a paperback copy that I'll highlight certain portions and put it in my golfbag.

Hogan nailed it down for us in his book.

My 2 favorites are "How I Play Golf" by Tiger Woods, and "Golf My Own Damn Way" by John Daly. I bought JD's book more for entertainment purposes, but it actually proved to be pretty helpful.

There is no substitute for the USGA rulesbook. Joining the USGA gets you a copy every six months, I believe, and they should be available at your golf shop

anyway . That having been said, Arnold Palmer wrote a book called Playing By the Rules that has the rules, his explanations of them, and instances when they came up in important matches (professional events mostly). A few of the rules have been changed since then, but most of the book is still accurate.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Hogan's 5 fundamentals has been incredibly eye opening for me. I almost feel like I wasted the last 3 years screwing around without them.

A warning though, and maybe not everyone agrees, but Hogan's swing is not the swing that most people use/teach today. I think you have to pick a swing and then stick with it, so if you are following Hogan then you should ignore pretty much every tip you will see in magazines or get from your buddies. For me Hogan's swing works much better.

I got mine for less than $5 (including shipping) from half.com.

good luck,
greg

I have to agree on Tiger's book...much better for all around than Hogan's and I'm a huge Hogan fan. It's just not that helpful for a beginner. maybe the David Ledbetter version would be more useful.

    • I agree.  I think I'll trounce them at Monology tonight. ... Bwahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!
    • I’ve never really let my kids win at anything deliberately. I mostly just played games a little bit more casually just to try to match their ability to strategize, but if they won it wasn’t because I threw the game or anything. I don’t feel like my kids need to or should win all the time. That’s not how life works, and the sooner they learn that, the better off they will be.
    • That’s going to be a no from me. Why should I pay extra for new technology just because of their R&D cost? I doubt they’re going to be transformative. I’ll stick with the old tech if it’s cheaper.
    • I almost did a coffee spit take.  Well played sir. Well played.
    • My whole family likes Mille Bourne. We've done family tournaments. I've always enjoyed Euchre too. My company has an annual Euchre tournament.  My kids like Monopoly. I like it too, but my wife makes me let the kids win.  ... BTW - How old do your kids have to be before you no longer have to let them win at Monopoly? Cuz, I keep suggesting to my wife that I should be allowed to smoke them by now.  Our family also plays Blokus Trigon a lot, a bunch of Spy Alley and a bit of Azul.
