Why is the pitching wedge included in a set of irons? I mean why is it called a wedge, but always included when people buy a set of irons? Couldn't it have a better name, or not be in the set? Just curious.

they arent always called pitching wedges. I have a 10 iron. I agree though, I think it should be called a 10 iron, but what do I know?

Why is the pitching

When I first heard of this, I figured it was because the PW now has the loft of yesteryear's 9-iron, so it was included. But then I realized that the old sets had PW included, too.

So after a while, I realized people used to only play two wedges: PW and SW. The SW was the only one they bought separately, while the PW was part of the iron set. There was no need for a gap wedge then, because PW to SW was about the difference of 9-Iron to PW. And the LW wasn't in wide use, if it even existed.

Just an FYI...You don't have to purchase the PW with the set. When you customize irons at TGW and Golfsmith, you have the option of ordering the irons you want.

When my dad bought his Ping Zing Black Dot about 10 years ago, his second hand set included 2-SW all matching clubs...

Same with Roger Dunn. I ordered my latest irons as 4-9, and I could've just picked up the even or odd ones if I had wanted.
