You don't have any distance gaps? What about playing out of deep rough? That does not pose a problem for you with such few clubs?

I second this question. There would be no way I could play with just those clubs.

My 8 year old only plays 4 clubs in her junior set. Short iron, long iron, driver, putter.....:)

by proper golf i meant a 6600yard course not a pitch and putt!

so used to playing with just these clubs i dont think it hurts my scoring much at all.

i hit the ball hard so never really need long irons anyway and with a couple of wedges and a 7 iron i can cover all the second shots i may face.

4 clubs is just crazy though!!

Carrying fewer clubs will definitely make you learn some creative shotmaking skills instead of using the same swing each time.

Because of the specialized function of the putter, we'll exclude it for this discussion...

Otherwise, I don't think that anyone in this, or any other online golf-related discussion forum, will be able to fault the fact that at least half of your "playing" clubs are wedges. With that ratio, we know your set make-up is indeed, proper.

My winter set had only 6 clubs, but you still beat me. The courses here were so wet you couldn't hit an iron, so I played driver, 5w, 7w, 9w, SW (just for bunkers) and putter. Couldn't take more than a 2/3 swing except on the tee, and still broke my PB twice.

Didn't Seve learn to play with just a single cast-off iron, and that is (one reason) why he was such a creative shotmaker?

The large majority of amateur golfers do not need to be "shotmakers." They need to know how to pick the straightest/simplest line to the safest place to play your next shot from, and then hit it there. There may be some value in trying every now and then, but playing with three clubs, IMO, is no long-term idea. If the OP is truly a 0.0 doing so, god bless him.

Nothing in the swing is done at the expense of balance.

I'm a beginner. I only use 7 clubs.

I can't hit the driver, so I don't bring it. I can't hit it cleanly, consistently, so why try at this point? It does me more harm then good.

I use:
3W
5I
7I
9I
PW
SW
Putter

My 5I and my 7I are my go-to clubs. I use them for everything. I'm most comfortable with them, and I have learned to hit them fairly straight consistently.

I actually carry my 5W with me, but I have never once used it on a course. I need to start practicing with it to help out with some of these longer holes. I have a 60* Lob wedge at home that I'm practicing a bit with in the backyard. I'm starting to build a little consistency with it, and there were a couple of times I've wished I've had it with me. So, I'm probably going to add that one soon.

But, so far, 7 clubs. That's it.

10.5* Driver (don't really ever use it)

i was in local qualifiying for the open a few years back right? and this dude, name was mccavey or somethin like that ray or roy. anyway he gets pissed on the hole in front of me at his caddie and breaks all his clubs cept a 7 iron. so we finish the round and i see him and i'm like, hey man what did you shoot on those last few holes. and he says, "I parred in with my 7 iron. You ever shot par with a seven iron?" i just kinda laughed and slipped his girl my number as i was leavin (we ended up hookin up a few months later after he threw away the open, or at least thats what i heard) anyway, one crazy dude. but it can be done

Sounds like you plan out the shots well and use what works. Hey MelloJoe I have never bagged a club because I cant hit it well all the time, What's the point to that... cause if you dont use it you wont learn how to control it dont ya think. Then if you keep leaving it in the bag you loose confidence with it. In my opinion it isnt the clubs fault for the bad shots it's the the players swing so try to fix that instead....

Sort of sounds like a guy I saw playing in a local qualifier that if he won he could get on the PGA tour and even play for the gold jacket. Anyway... dude drove a par 4 and put it in the hole, then he said "I think I will try to put it in the hole on the first shot every time!" Dude couldn't putt worth a lick until his teacher got him a putter shaped like a hockey stick. Anyway forgot his first name but I think his last name was Gillsmore, or something like that.

OK, the absurd has turned into the stupidly absurd now.

    • I am currently playing a Cobra Ltdx LS 9 degree driver and Cobra Ltdx LS FW3. Both with Tensei White stock stiff shafts and original weights of 12g (heel) and 3g (toe). My miss is usually a pull fade or sometimes a slice, swing is out to in. Driver swing speed about 112 mph. Grips are stock regular. Intended change: Driver: Switching to Tensei White x-flex one inch shorter which I suppose would be 44,5? Changing heel weight to 18g. Changing grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Change hosel setting to standard draw. FW3: Changing heel weight to 16g (apparently not available in FW weights, but supposed to be something called "internal weight" a club builder can add which fits between the weight and the screw?). Change grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Changing hosel setting to standard +1. The goal is to 1) get better grip since I tend so lose grip in warm and moist conditions with the current grips and 2) mitigate the misses to start more straight with less side spin. Also considering adding the Cobra Ltdx LS FW5 instead of my old Taylormade R9 and getting 14g heel and 6g toe weights with the same grip as the others and hosel setting standard +1.   All of the above is based on conversations with ChatGPT and, as everyone knows, it can come up with pretty much whatever but I spent a few hours asking about different perspectives etc and this was the recommendation. So, my question is basically, does it make any sense?   Thanks.
