So for the last few month's I've really been working on putting, putting in 4-5 hr's in per week on the practice greens and my putting has really begun to come around. I'm extremely comfortable at 4-6 ft sinking 4/6 balls consistantly with the other 2 lip outs or just offline. at 10 ft i'd say im 50/50 with same results.

I decided I'd reward myself with a real putter instead of the customized Never Compromise I was using. At first all I looked at were mallet putters- white hots, 2 balls, rife's, TM's, Ping's etc. Then I started playing with blades. Of course, like everyone before me, I had to try out some SC's. Boy was that a mistake. I tried really really hard to not like the SC's . In fact I left them alone for about a week and tried everything else, but the feeling lingered and I went back today to try them.

Well, the end of this story is obvious. I tested a couple SC's along with other putters and I don't know if it was mental or not, but GAWD did the SC's feel nice. I told myself I'd buy the putter that worked the best from 8-10 ft (birdie range for me) and consistantly sank the most with a SC Newport 2 Detour. I also did very well with an Odyssey but I decided on the SC because this will probably the last putter for me for a few years and I believe you shouldn't "settle" for a putter...and I know I'd be pineing for the SC even if I bought the Odyssey lol

Anyways, I'm excited to have a new putter and a SC at that. For those of you that have SC's, do you find it's the real deal? Or did you get it because it was a SC?

You know, I can't say I ever even held one but last week I sank 10/10 with a Nike putter. 4 footers to 18 feet. Hundred bucks. I can't imaging I would do much better with something else and considering putting is the strongest part of my game I never shoulda picked up that Nike. Now I want it.

Myself, I can't and don't like mallet style, give me a blade. Maybe someday I will try the SC but at this point, I can't see where it would help me. I need irons first, then driver and maybe a 3W. Never used anything but driver and then irons/hybrids, but I feel like I have to have a 3 wood in the bag for some reason.

Ya, I understand ya. But my justification for splurging on a putter was:

I'll use a putter 18-40 times a round, compared to 14 times for a driver, or 3-4 times for a 3 wood.
The putter is THE scoring club. Less the eagles and occasinal chip in's, it's the club that puts the ball in the hole.
I want a putter that installs confidence within myself when i stand over it, even if it is only mental.

Will the SC make me hole more putts than another putter? Dunno, but I really like the feel and sound over my old putter.

They are good putters with a nice feel. With a nice feel, and knowing it's a good putter your stroking it with, comes confidence, which is all mental...so yeah, it has a lot to do with the club giving you confidence which is mental. It all ties in together.

I believe that most people get a SC, because it is a SC.
Same reason most people get titleist or mizuno blades.
It is mainly mental why SC's feel so good I believe.

I got rid of my SC because it was just a putter. Looked like dynamite. Didn't put(t) the ball in the hole despite being called a Scotty Cameron. Gave it to my dad.

a) For some, there's a mental component. They think they'll putt better with a Cameron because everyone talks so highly about them, so they do, usually only for a little while.

b) For others, the mental component is simply that they like the way it looks, feels, sounds, etc. That usually sticks around for awhile.

c) For others, it's about performance, which is a little bit of b and a little bit of other stuff.

For me personally, it's a blend of all of them. The simple fact is that good putters could putt with anything, and a PGA Tour player gets all of their equipment for free. They aren't Cameron Collectors willing to spend $3k on a putter, yet the vast majority them use Cameron putters. That speaks to the second two points above (though admittedly there's very little between b and c).

To me, and I've had a few SC's, is both style, quality, performance, value, collectibility..not necessarily in that order..but what comes to mind. I think most of his designs (minus the high MOI designs like the Futura, Detour, etc.) are timeless, classic, simple and look good anytime.

As for quality, you get what you pay for..it's that simple. Each putter is a work of art and look flat out solid when you pick one up. I just don't get the same when I try an Odyssey or a Never Compromise.

As far as performance goes I think this is a very open ended benchmark as it's up to the individual user..what's the use of a high end sports car without a talented driver? To each his own.

In the value department, yes, they are expensive...but they are the best..and will hold their value more than a PING Redwood or etc. This leads to the next topic that SC's are highly collectible and can fetch a pretty penny depending on which model you have..sometimes the condition doesn't even matter.

Start checking you closets, garage, etc..if you got a SC that says Napa..give me a ring.

Hate to sound too much like a psychologist, but mentality IS reality. If you have a tool that makes you putt better, for whatever the reason, than it is doing its job. The trick is to try to replicate the confidence using something that is cheaper. I wish I could, then I would save so much on golf equipment (and camera equipment, and rock climbing gear, and guitars, etc.)

For me , I can tell the difference between my Scotty Select and my Karsten Anser, and I prefer the SC. Is it worth the extra $250? My wife doesn't think so.

I use my SC putter because the feel and sound of the putter is so much better than anthing I have tried. That alone makes me putt better because I am confident with it. Putting is mental if you are not confident with the your putter you cant make a confident stroke.

I was debating to go with the odyssey 2-ball or the SC futura. I heard so many great things about the 2-ball and everyone around me had one. But once I hit the futura it felt so much more comfortable. They are so worth the money if you get the use out of them.

I just tried one of the new SC studio selects last night. Actually first time that I've tried an SC. I wanted to see what all the buzz was about and why people are so fanatical over these $300 putters. My honest opinion is that they don't really do it for me. I was not overly impressed with the feel, sound, etc. Certainly not enough to ditch my 2-ball and shell out $300 for one. Solid putting has little to do with equipment and more to do with confidence. That being said, if buying a $300 putter gives you more confidence then more power to you.

i think it's both. a SC isn't gonna make a terrible putter an amazing one... but the truth is you're paying for
the name
the confidence that it instills
and let's face it: A WORK OF ART.

SC's are more than just a putter. they're a masterpiece.
from the feel, the perfect weight
the sound
the streamline design of a newport really makes you feel comfortable..confident when lining up the putt. and if you hit a bad putt..you know it's not the putter.. it's the stroke.

I switched out from a bulky 2 ball that i really had problems aligning to the newport 2, and i couldn't be happier...especially since my boy at GS hit me off with 30%. but I would've paid the full 3 for it.

I still think it's mostly in your head. As Eric said, putting is all about feel, and feel is a result of the communication between your brain and your hands. If it feels good the brand shouldn't matter, but some players can't get the "feel" without the name. I like to think that I can be impartial when I test putters, and I've tried everything that Golfsmith carries. I don't argue that the Camerons feel good, but I've used others that feel just as good to me, and I'm NOT going to pay $300 and up just to see if it works as well on the course. Especially not when I seem to get the same feel from putters costing less than half as much.

Plus I happen to love my current putter....

Cameron makes a good, but overpriced putter. That's my opinion.

I paid $20 for my ugly-as-hell nickent pipe putter, but it gets the job done. There is not enough technology in a putter to warrant dropping $300 on one, imho.

I agree. I went with a White Hot #7. It was over $100, but it just felt right. It is more mental to me.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
