I have yet to see any golf magazine focus on the impact position.

Instead they always want to create more mystery about the golf swing. I guess they don't want to kill the goose that laid the golden egg.

The only thing I don't like all that much about the tips they give are that they don't tell you why.

You are right, but I don't think Golf Magazines really intend to teach you how to play golf. Magazines exist to sell equipment, automobiles, travel and real estate to avid golfers. If we are lucky we get some interesting interviews, travel and equipment reviews and tournament news. But the teaching part is just an afterthought. Reporting on teaching trends maybe?. Does anyone expect Baseball Weekly to teach you how to play baseball?

Can't remember which magazine, but I wish they'd leave out the "Groaners" section (basically bad jokes that someone would say in your group).

All it does is remind me of the guy who can't shut up for 30 seconds all day and hits you with stupid jokes on every tee box.

"haha.....good one."

The Golf Digest with Phil on the cover (two months back?) had him talking about how you shouldn't change your swing or set up to adapt to different launch conditions, you should just change shafts and club heads! It was an ad for Callaways interchangable driver heads/shafts masquerading as an instructional article. Whatever respect I had for Phil circled the drain while reading that on the throne.

anyone remember Golf Magazine having an article a while back with a guy with red hair(ex pro golfer, name doesn't come to mind) advocating 'hitting down' on your driver, and bottoming out 4 inches past impact?

P.P.S. Hey, you commented in that thread a few times! Maybe you

its all coming back hah..

Actually, I'm remembering that now - I haven't posted on these forums in a while after becoming a golf recluse during the off season(I hate what living in the northeast does to my golf game). Actually it's probably for the better because I've forgotten all the silly swing thoughts that served only to make me nervous and forget key fundamentals. but back on topic, I just dug out that issue from my bookcase, and there are a couple other zany ideas that man has got. Looking like they caught him mid-sneeze in all the pictures doesn't add any extra credibility to his ideas either . (EDIT: upon review of the original post it looks like you've already addressed this, too. )

I just burst out a laugh at the drain circle. I remember the article, which was in my last(cancelled subscription) of Golf Digest. It was blantant advertising for Callaway, heck it was almost plagarized from a Callaway Magazine article. I liked a recent article about a 3 day a week 3 hour a day workout routine to break 80. If I had that much spare time, I would be on the course instead of standing in the gym. I went through a bunch of my past issues and found maybe two instructional articles that were useful. Now, my only golf related subscription is Golf World(just news from the tour) and Golf Tips(actual drills to help a club-golfer improve).

Did anyone see the issue about joining a golf club? That was a laugh to us muni players. I also find it tough to stomach the articles about the "best public courses you can play" that cost $200 plus!

well, to be fair, they all do this. Jim Furyk went on and on about his srixon ball in a golf magazine issue a while back. prob half a dozen other examples i'm to lazy to think of right now too.

I saw an article about turning your shoulders or something in I think golf mag which suggested you put shaving cream on your chin, and then when you swing if you turn correctly you should have smear of shaving cream on your shirt.

I'm sorry, that's idiotic.

golf magazines will contradict themselves with advice tips within the space of five issues. Magazines that constantly promise to "cure the slice". Magazines are designed to sell advertising, thus always feature the common denominator. Magazines are great when there is a good article or interview, but I have cancelled all previous subscriptions except for Advid Golfer Dallas (which is more of a lifestyle magazines than a golf magazine)

One issue of Golf Digest listed Aaron Baddeley as leading the tour in driving distance at 315 yards. It was a misprint for Bubba Watson, kinda silly.

Golf magazines are like womens' magazines. Full of ridiculous promises aimed at the gullible.
"Bomb it like Tiger'
"30 extra yards, guaranteed"
"Putt like the pros"
"Nail your irons"
"Never miss another fairway"
etc. etc.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

Golf trips to way off locations like "Golf in Uruguay".

Come on, even among the golf community no one can pull a trip like this.
Travelling around the globe, and then have one course in reach, that bills 300$ to play. The next good course is another 150 miles away, and also costs big $$$.

Those trips are only a treat for the magazine guys themselves.

There was another, similar to the Mickelson/Callaway ad, recently in Golf Magazine. "Back to School" or something like that. The article described the writer's few days at a Dave Pelz school and the phenomenal results. Clearly an ad for Pelz's schools.

    • I have been debating getting a launch monitor of some sort, if only so I can re-figure my shot zones (I haven't actually mapped them in years) and also to practice distance wedges at home.  I have to see if this works with either my current setup, or what my setup would be if I move it to the garage.
    • Day 48, June 23.  After work today, I took 25 minutes in my practice room;  6-iron, same everything as yesterday except the time and count.
    • Well, this is interesting.  I think we discovered a few months ago that I haven't been following professional golf in a while (my confusion about Scotty's footwork confirmed that), so at least as I aim to follow a bit more I'll get something new to learn with all of you.  My very quick read of Erik's summary makes me think this new Challenger series fits somewhere between Korn Ferry and the Championship (not Champions, but I know I'm going to make that mistake a few times if I'm not careful!).   My recollection is that there were already second-tier events among the PGA Tour;  the Bob Hope didn't have the same quality of field as the event at Riviera (whose current name I forget, although now that I say that, I realize the Palm Springs event hasn't been called the Bob Hope in a few years either).   With the absence of the FedEx (if I'm reading that correctly), does that mean no more FedEx Cup at all? Hopefully I'll have time later in 2026 to sit down and see what we're in for in 2027, where one of my goals already is to follow more professional golf.
    • The highlights as I see them: Championship and Challenger Series The creation of the PGA Tour and the PGB Tour, in the words of Joel Dahmen a few years ago. They're calling them the Championship Series (23-24 events) and the Challenger Series (20+ events). Both run February to August. They feel this will achieve three things: increasing the consistency and quality of fields across the season creating a clear system for players to earn and retain status and delivering a more structured and competitive experience for fans and partners—all in an effort to strengthen meritocracy. Championship Series Structure and Eligibility The 23-24 events includes the Players, majors, season-ending events, and the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. These will be 72-hole events with a 36-hole cut to the top 65 and ties and purses of $20M+. 120 players without an alternate list. 90 players (roughly) from the previous year and 20 players promoted from the Challenger Series. Full eligibility will be finalized later this year. Sites (cities) to be finalized soon, but 10 of the 15 courses have already been determined. Postseason: includes retention and relegation and concludes with match play. The Tour Championship will also be played across a rotation of prestigious courses. Challenger Series Structure and Eligibility 20+ events. Running concurrently. Will feature players fighting their way back to the Championship Series or players graduating and on the upswing from the Korn Ferry Tour. Many of these events will be current PGA Tour courses. About 7 of the Challenger Series events will be during off weeks for the Championship Series with elevated purses and visibility. Purses of at least $4M, with cuts similar to the Champ series. 144 player fields. Competitive Fields for Both Series Players will be eligible for only one series at a time: Championship Series Players are not eligible for Challenger Series events. Championship Series members will have a known schedule with all events having the same eligibility. Players and Majors will have their own eligibility criteria. Championship Series players don't have to play all events. This begs the question about, say, the Canadian Open, and other "home-town" events that players might want to play, even if they're Challenger Series events. Will releases be granted? Promotion and Relegation At least 90 players will be retained in the Championship Series, and 20 players will be promoted from the Challenger Series each year. Battlefield promotion for two-time winners from the Challenger Series. Players relegated from the Championship Series will have a "last chance" opportunity to retain status, or will go to the Challenger Series. Criteria will be finalized before the start of the 2027 season. Points System New points system (not FedExCup points). Separate points systems for the Championship and Challenger Series. Elevated points in the Challenger Series for off-weeks on the Championship Series. More details tk. Elevated International Events in the Fall The fall schedule will include a limited series of elevated international events with top players from the Championship Series, with the intent to deliver in partnership with the DP World Tour as part of the Strategic Alliance. Last Chance Series The Tour will develop a “last chance” series of 4-6 events in the fall, with a limited number of spots on the Championship Series available for top finishers. Eligibility will include players relegated from the Championship Series, Challenger Series players, and other categories to be determined. Q-School continues, as do the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Also, Brian Rolapp is the new commissioner as of January 1, 2027.
