I just commited to getting new wedges and got the full set ranging from 56/14, 58/8 and 60/8 deg. I also have a gap 50 deg that came along with my set.

Anyway..what kind of difference will there actually be between a 56 to a 58? Then from a 58 to 60? Does the 2 deg. difference (from one to the next, 56 to 58, respectively) REALLY make a difference?

I normally play my 56 from 100 yard in with a full swing and then would basically feel it out when the yardages got less then that and either choke up and shorten the swing for each lower yardage.

can it be assumed that the ONLY reason (besides all those creative shots from around the green) I would want the 58 and 60 would be to be able to make FULL swings now? instead of choking down and being more creative with the 56 deg.?

Thanks for your help.

It is not usual to carry all three of the high lofts 56, 58, and 60. Usually you want a stronger wedge denoted as gap wedge with a loft 52-54 degrees.

Popular is 52-56-60 or 54-58.

Right now I don't think I play enough to master both a 56 and a 60 around the green so I use my 60 for all high loft shots, all "close" sand shots, and many short range chips.

I am of the people that carry a 52, 56, and 60. But you will notice a difference even with only 2 degrees

Yes, it's somewhat odd you bought all 3 high lofts.

I am in the process of buying 2 new wedges and I am only going to use 54 - 60. I also have an older 56 I carry sometimes. The 2 degree difference is noticeable. I use it for just what you said, to take a full swing from 110 yards with my 54. And to use my 56 or 60 for closer shots like 80 and 40. (Better to use a full swing, more consistent for someone of our handicaps)

I carry a 50, 54, and 58...it gives me 25 yrds difference between clubs. You are looking for a set that will fill in the gaps in your yardages. In my case, I hit my PW in my set about 145. Then the 50 goes 125, 54 goes 100, and 58 goes 75. so I 'filled in' the gaps in those scoring distances. I find myself on shorter courses hitting driver and one of these wedges nearly every par 4. Oh, and I have a 64 just for fun stuff!

Dent, how far do you carry your PW? If you go from a PW to a 60*.......thats a big difference and alot of half shots or really hard ones, depending on which one you hit. You def. should add a wedge or two to fill in that gap with clubs you can hit full speed.

I'd say I can carry my pitching wedge about 115-120. Which I find a huge pain to try and approach a tight pin with a PW within 100 yards. A 54* should be perfect correct? That and it can give me some workability around the greens instead of using a PW?

Absolutely, try them out first, try a 52, 54, 56 just to see.

Go somewhere where you can hit the club you buy, and has accurate range markers so you can be sure you hit it 100 yrds.

I personally find about 4* difference to be perfect between clubs for me, but Im a bit of a wedge nut!!!

If your PW is 48 and your lob is 60 then 54 would split the difference (yep - math major, hahahaha)

As far as brand, all of the new ones are great. Cleveland, Callaway, Titleist Vokey, etc.....

I've voted out the Callaway Wedges:

Its now inbetween the: CG12, Taylormade Wedges, or the Vokeys. toughest choice I've ever had to make.

Wedge loft is more personal preference than anything. I took my 60 out of my bag last year because I feel like opening the face on my 56 gives me enough loft to manage tricky situations, but my buddy is deadly with his 60. However I wouldn't think that carrying a two wedges with 2 degrees difference would be that useful imo.

Dent, I just ordered 2 TM z tp's so I'll let you know what I think of them if you're still looking in a week since there really isn't much in the way of reviews for them that I've been able to find.

Not sure right now..I play a Cleveland 588 51 deg..but with the 50 deg. gap wedge the set comes with, I put the 51 deg. in the closet. I'm still getting adjusted to the yardages as I have gained easily 10 yards.

Currently running Cleveland Irons TT558 which has a 44deg Pitching wedge then awhile ago I updated my "Tom Watson Adams" wedges to Cleveland 2.0 & RTX I went with 52 rtx 10 low bounce ,> 56 ,60 >2.0 blades mid bounce

My local GC is a Hard base Links course esp in summer with burnt off rough in the summer ... so wedge play can be hard work at times the 7-8 iron comes out for a bounce and run....

Now outside peak summer, I do get to play my wedges I seem to reach for the 56 over the others really using the 60deg for sand or trick shot off soft rough.. the 52 I have had my issues coming up short at or long with the 44deg P wedge >> I get to the point where I'm either ripping the head off the 52 to make the 110 yards etc or having to grip down on the P with a much softer swing for the same distance

I'd say take all the wedges to the practice area, and learn the differences, based on the user's swing.

Imo, the difference really boils down to the how well the golfer contacts the ball. How good their impact position is. The better the the contact on the ball, the bigger the difference between the different wedges. With a poor swing, and/or impact position, I don't think much difference will show up. There will be some, just not as much as a better swing would produce.

I am back to using 4 wedges again. There is a 4* difference between each of the four clubs. If there was only a 2* difference between the clubs, I'd probably only carry two of the four. My ball striking is not precise enough to use a 2* difference. Heck, I barely see a difference in the 4* difference.

This caught my interest since I also currently have the Tom Watson set. I am considering going with Tour Edge Custom wedges (forged) since the loft/bounce are close to what I have. 52/08 56/12. Tour edge also has selections in between i.e. 54,58. Their bounce numbers have 2 place decimals. My Pitching wedge came with the iron set of EXi's with graphite.  The forged wedges would have DG Steel.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
