Putters: Mallets or Blades for high handicapper

Let's see, if I hit the sweet spot but my putter is turned 3 degress out, I bet I will miss the hole!

Regarding the statement that it is (scientifically) easier to flip a heel shafted blade around its shaft than a center shafted mallet, that is just (scientifically) wrong. If we are talking about rotation around the shaft, a heel shafted putter will have a higher moment of inertia (axis of rotation around the shaft) than a center shafted putter by a factor of 4 (assuming the same clubhead weight). IOW, the center shafted club will have to weigh more than 4x the heel shafted putter before it would have a higher moment of inertia (axis around the shaft).

This happens because MOI is directly proportional to mass and directly proportional to the square of the distance from the axis of rotation. MOI around the center of gravity (important when dealing with off-center hits) is a different story because rotation in that case is not around the shaft. dave

The key to putting is finding a consistent putting stroke. Once you get a consistent stroke, you need to find a putter that is fitted to your stroke. You also need to realize that your stroke changes. In a Golf Digest article by Phil Mickelson, he talked about this, which is why (at the time) he used a blade heel shafted Cameron, and a center shafted Futura.

With this, for a high handicapper, I believe a mallet would be best. Generally a high handicapper has trouble missing the sweetspot. The sweetspot on a mallet is larger than on a blade, thus making it easier to find the sweetspot. In another Golf Digest article, Ping DOC putter was voted best putter. The Red X was voted highly also. The Two-Ball is one the best selling putters in history. There are reason for all of this. Mallets are simply easier to hit.
