yeah, you'd think that after landing the ball short and spinning it backwards he would figure out "gee, maybe if i'm getting this much spin i should land the ball past the hole"

when i play, i do the opposite. i rarely get spin so i have to land in front of the hole.

he just had a brain fart, but it was pretty funny

Couldnt have said it better myself. He thinks his short game is superb on tour. That fat man Pelz talks Phil up so much that I swear I think Phil puts himself in akward positions just to prove he is a short game whiz. (Joking as everyone on this site takes everything so literally, but it almost seems like he is always trying to perform miracles with his wedges)

64 degree wedge? Almost laughable. Who needs that much loft?

I don't really see how arrogance played any part in it... Phil was way behind, and I doubt he really cares if he finishes 10th or 48th...

1st was maybe a mishit, then... 2nd he still wants to stick it close and try to make a good score... 3rd... probably should have grabbed a different club 4th, well ?????, but NOT arrogance. I think it is a bit asinine to make the comment that you just made.

Its surprisingly bad course management for somebody of his calibre.

bad course management? This is phil mickelson go for it all on every shot! I enjoy watching him try these impossible shots don't get me wrong but course management your kidding me right?! He has horrible course management he either goes for it and doesn't usually succeed or has poor course management aka driver at winged foot or over thinks his course management like hitting three wood the first two rounds at torrey pines. you saw where that got him 275 away in the rough while tiger and A scott were at least further up so if they were in the rough they had a more lofted club in their hands. Phil tried to use good course managament and overthought things i think his quote was, "i want to hit the ball around 275 and have it run out to300 because anything over 300 the fairways turn or there is trouble." It is hard for it to "run out" to 300 when you hit it in the rough everytime you idiot. I am sorry phil but tiger didn't get into much trouble banging it out there 330 on one leg oh and by the way he won the tournament doing that. Poor phil as rick reilly would say "watching phil is like watching a drunk chase a balloon on the edge of the cliff." Man i do miss his back page article in sports illustrated.

That 4th hit was arrogance. Too arrogant to try something different. Too arrogant to actually think that his first choice wasn't the correct one. He is "Phil f-ing Mickelson and by God he WILL get it up there with that club" - that's arrogance.

to be arrogant is to be excessively proud or full of one's self... maybe he couldn't admit he was wrong with his club selection, but that's not arrogance.

So if you had to use one word to describe not being able to admit you chose the wrong club (and hitting it 4 times) what would that word be?

stubborn would be my first choice...

other candidates... determined, hard-headed, unchanging, unrealistic, and the list goes on... but not arrogant. Arrogant is the guy who says he's the best when he's not, the guy who blames bad luck when he looses instead of congratulating the winner, the guy who doesn't practice because he doesn't need to, the guy who disregards common courtesies because he's above them, the guy takes liberties others wouldn't... NOT the guy who (yes maybe stupidly) hits the same club 4 times expecting a different result.

You see it one way and I another. I have my opinion based on what I see and you have yours but I am hardly alone in mine (as I am sure you aren't alone in yours) Just didn't feel that it was asinine to suggest it. (after all arrogant+mickelson yields 18,300 hits on google)

You don't get the nickname FIGJAM from other tour players by being unassuming either.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
