Ram Laser Fx forged irons...

I recently started playing golf last year and have been using my uncles old clubs. They are Ram Laser Fx forged irons and if I had to guess I would say they were made in the early 90's. But Im not really sure. They have a steel shaft and are kind of heavy compared to newer clubs. What Im asking is if anyone has any idea when these were made and if they are bad for someone new to the game. I would assume so because I have heard forged clubs are used by more advanced players. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I looked on ironfinder.com and they say the Laser FX forged was 90-93, after that it became the FX2. Ram used to make some really nice irons, and since yours are cavity back, not blades, they might work very nicely for you. I personally play FX2 GT Steel (non-forged) irons with factory graphite shafts and absolutely love them.

I have tried some FX with steel shafts and found them to be somewhat dead feeling, presumably the shaft was too stiff for my tastes. What flex are yours? Bottom line is that if they feel good to you, play 'em. Don't let anyone tell you they aren't good enough because they aren't Callaway, Taylormade, etc. It'll be extra sweet when you whomp 'em with your hand-me-down Rams.

Yea they are kind of stiff and feel a little dead especially on the longer irons. Which I really dont use.

I play a set of Ram Lasers. May be the same thing, very nice clubs and I hit them well, but time for a new set.

I used to own a set of Laser fx clubs and loved them. I bought them in 1990 and would buy another set or a used set if I could find them.

Those are good clubs!  One of my friends has had that set since 1991.  He bought a Nike whatever a few years ago and after playing with the Nike whatevers he went back to his Rams.  Just make sure that they fit you...

I personally think some of these clubs made in the 90's are better than the Chinese crap they are trying to sell us now!

My Ram "hand me downs."  I learned the game with these irons and plan to hold on them for a while, I love them. I still break them out when my game needs some confidence reinforcement. I have owned numerous sets since, but still find myself pulling these out when I'm in a pinch.

I am unsure of the model other than Laser. I accuired them from my Dad in 1995 and he had them for a while. 3-sw in my set. (not my pic below, but the exact model)

I still have the Ram Lazer FX irons, 2-PW, total of nine clubs. Steel shaft regular flex.

These were purchased in 1991. Only used on the driving range for a few times so condition would be 9.

  I have a set of Ram Laser Fx irons that I bought in 1991 and played them until I took a leave of playing in 2007. I have the 1-SW (yes you read that right I have the 1 iron and 2 iron) with the S-300 shafts that I extended 1 1/2".  The real beauty of these being forged is the ability to adjust the loft and lie, even though I am on the short end of average height (5' 8') and I had extended the shaft 1 1/2" I also had them bent 1 degree upright (totally going against standard thinking) and 1 degree strong. Even though these are cavity back clubs they do allow for shaping your shots, the key is to hit the sweet spot which is larger on these clubs versus a forged blade.
  The reason I made these adjustments was that prior to purchasing this set (the Ram Laser FX was one of the first cavity backed forged clubs) I had lower back surgery, because of this surgery I had problems taking a normal stance. I was able to take a more upright stance and these adjustments allowed me to properly ground my club, also the added shaft length added a slight increase in club head speed without changing the kick point of the shaft.
   One thing that anyone who plays forged irons should be aware of is the need to check the loft and lie on a set schedule. As you play the impact of the ball and ground can cause slight changes in the loft and lie. When I was playing I would play 25+ rounds a month so I would always check the loft and lie once a month (sooner if I played more). Each player will have to figure out how often is best for them based on brand and also how hard you hit the ball.
    When I was able to play 6-7 days a week I reached a +2 handicap using these irons, depending on the course most of the time I would take the 1,3, and 4 irons out then i would round out my 14 clubs with my R-510, J head 3 and 5 metals, a 56 degree Cleveland wedge and any of several putters but usually a 32" bullseye. In all the years I have played golf I have never had a hole-in-one (have hit many flag sticks  and the cup only to have them bounce out) but I have had 3 double eagles (two using my 2 iron 215 yards and 234 yards). On some shorter courses I would leave the 5 metal out and added a 62 degree fourth wedge, 
  Anyone who is interested I am open to selling these but only as a complete 1-SW set unless someone wants to buy the 1 iron and 2 iron prior to selling the set. The 1 iron is very rare as few people ever ordered it to go with their set.

Hi all,

I’ve just been given these clubs from my brother in law they were last used pre 1996 the grips needed replacing so I’ve done this I took them out for the first time today and they were amazing. I’m currently using ping gmax as I’m a high handcap (25) more forgiving I don’t think so I’m going to put the Rams in my bag for this weekends comp weather permitting.

today I played 8 holes and played better than my handicap including a par on a par 4 and I hit a green with two balls on a short 130 yard hole still 3 putted with both balls short game is where I need to improve, what amazed me was every shot I hit went straight and true with a great ball flight it felt soft to hit and it stopped quickly on the greens they really amazed me for clubs over 25 years old. I’ve got 2 to SW and I can’t wait to play the full round with them, anyone want to by some ping gmax 5-SW and 4 crossover there up for sale

Back in the last century, when I started playing golf, everybody started with forged blades, for the simple reason that there wasn't anything else. There was no cavity back, no perimeter weighting, and no club fitting ( horrors!) You played with the clubs your old man did't play anymore, or whatever you could scrounge at the local  golf course from the junk bins. I think very kid in my family started with an old set of Spalding Top Flight blades.. Also the balls were all wound balata or surlyn, The solid Top Flight ball would come later. i scrounged from my Dad's shag bag. Serious players all had a shag bag back then.. so it was Titleists. Spalding   Dot and Maxfli.. Given those handicaps, it's amazing that some of us learned to hit the ball and actually become pretty good players.
