Is ground going to be made up here? Will his ranking take a hit? Maybe he won't be #1 going into '09?

Personally I think he shouldn't be #1 just by the fact he doesn't play enough events. He needs to play more. (Even when he is healthy.) That's one of the reasons I hate the OWGR. I remember Aaron Olberholser a couple years back had an injury and missed majority of the year, but yet his ranking didn't take a huge hit. Idle players should have to suffer the consequences in the rankings.

Gimme a break. Name one guy better than Tiger on tour. No one, which is why Tiger is #1, and will stay #1 for a long time.

He shouldn't suffer because he's the best. The best means #1.
What I Play:

Irons: Staff Ci6 3-PW StiffWedges: Vokey Spin Milled 54.10 60.04Putter: Newport Studio Style 35"Ball: Pro V1xAge: 15

Phils got a lot of ground to make up, I don't think Tiger has anything to worry about

Tiger has won 4 times this year,so someone will have to top that, plus he came in second to ogilvy when he won.I think his ranking safe.

Haha. I remember when Tiger first got to #1 in the world and people said the same thing. "Tiger will never be dethroned!" Mr. Singh had something to say about that.

Yes the gap is large, but think about it. It's only 10 points and Tiger is shut down for the rest of the year. Lets say Phil wins the last 2 majors and maybe one or two other events. Then what? The gap will be closing. Don't be naive.

I wouldn't count on it

First - Phil isn't going to do that.

Second - The gap will be closer but I doubt it would close (I say that not knowing the specifics of how they actually figure it out. Guessing the BCS is an easier equation) Third - Until someone takes that ranking from Tiger while he is playing (actively) he is the world's best golfer. I don't give 2 squirts in a bucket what anyone says. Someone may have the actual title while Tiger is hurt but you can not tell me they are actually better golfers than Tiger. What interests me is when Tiger retires - how long would he still be #1 before someone in the field overtook him with their play on tour.

The only naive thing I see here is you suggesting that Phil is going to win the British Open.

Mr. Singh wasn't the only one. According to

Wikipedia's chronological list , it seems Mr. Els, Mr. Norman, Mr. Els again, Mr. Duval, and Mr. Singh have taken the title from him.

Well, IIRC, ranking points expire after a window of time, so once that window has no Tiger events in it, someone else will be #1.

They diminish slowly over a period of two years.

correct me if i am wrong, but its a point average based on the quality of field taken over 2 years events over 1 year old are 50% weighted and majors are double or more weighted. points are allocated based on position and in proportion regardless of finishing position.

this being the case i dont see his points avg falling by much at all and he will still be world number 1 at the end of the season.

his points will only dwindle when he starts playing bad golf (dont hold your breath)

k

The world ranking is rigged. I hate it. Let me give you another example:

Justin Rose in the past 6 events has 4 MC, 1 WD, and a T-2 in a weak field event....but yet he's #7 in the world?! Also, he has never won on tour.

I like Justin Rose alot and will be rooting for him this week in Cromwell, but come on now.

Back to Tiger. I really do believe that the OWGR favor people who don't play often (like Tiger).

It's not rigged. You're talking like someone who doesn't even know how it's determined.

Do the research, then come back when you know how it works. Perhaps then we'll be able to take you seriously. You can "believe" all you want, but wouldn't you much rather KNOW why and how it works?

Okay. Maybe it's not rigged. I have a general idea of how the system works, and I don't like it. Here is why. Tiger and Phil are #1 and #2. Fair enough...nothing disputable here. However when you get past these two it seems like the spots between 3-1415 is just a huge jam. I mean the numbers are so close that a single mistake on the calculator could be the difference between playing in the Masters and watching it home on T.V.

There must be a better way.

The world ranking is rigged. I hate it. Let me give you another example:

If it were the PGA TOUR Rankings, I'd agree that this would be problematic. But this isn't the past 6 events on the PGA Tour. This is meant to reflect the recent past, and anyone can have a few off weeks in golf.

Justin Rose has won twice in the past year: Australian Masters and Volvo Masters. In 2007, he finished top-12 in every major. The only other player to do this last year is currently out for the rest of this season.

erm the world rankings are WORLD rankings not just rankings from america (despite the fact many americans seem to believe the land of the stars and stripes is actually the world) i am not really a fan of justin rose, but he won the euro order of merit which is why he has a high ranking, also the rankings are calculated over a couple of years

Those are European Tour events which don't generate good (by good I mean high ranking players) fields like the PGA Tour does, which is why Europen victories are not worth as much in boosting up the world rankings. The top-12 in every major in '07 was very impressive, but this is '08.

erm the world rankings are WORLD rankings not just rankings from america (despite the fact many americans seem to believe the land of the stars and stripes is actually the world)

America may not be "the world" but it definitely is the sporting world in my eyes. It is home of the four major sport organizations (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL) and home of the PGA Tour which is the top golf tour, along with many other major sporting organizations.

I'm not dissing the European Tour. Europe is a good place to go for an easy paycheck.

    • Not really, no. I don't know the history, what you've worked on, what you've tried and moved away from… etc.
    • Day 9: 2/16/25 Putting through 50 mm gates from 11”. Swing pressure shift drills.
    • Definitely not a favorite… For some reason my wife and I started watching Cobra Kai. I know the original was pretty cheesy, but the inability of these people to get over shit that happened like 30 years ago is astounding. And these kids would be arrested, but they don’t even seem to get suspended from school. Would Danny not notice that Johnny’s son looks like Johnny? Etc.? Why would a completely different dojo that has the same name be “banned”? Oy. Not sure we’ll make it to season 2.
    • Day 139 - 2025-02-16 Weather led to a rescheduled GEARS lesson, so I used the time to work on my swing for 60 minutes or so. All downswing stuff. Some swings at 93 MPH. Most around 75-80.
    • A question I have is…this swing (fade, pull cut) does not  feel as good and easily repeatable as the draw swing we were working on previously.  I’m kinda in a weird spot where I do not know which direction will be the best to pursue. I like seeing a penetrating 5 yard draw but also like the thought of the fade not getting away from me as much.    Any thoughts on that?
