I just picked up a set of '08 Adams Undercut OS irons that came w/ a free $80 Adams stand bag for $175 on Ebay and they are a solid set of sticks. Probably the greatest deal I'll ever find on clubs.......

The best deal on the market are the Wilson Staff Pi5

I second this. I got these a few months ago for $199 with free shipping from rockbottomgolf.com. I was using Callaway X-18 irons at the time, but the Pi5's kicked them out of the bag almost immediately. The build quality, as well as the components used in the clubs, is the equal of any of the more popular club companies.

Callaway FT-9 Tour I-mix 9.5° Driver (Fujikura Zcom Pro 65 stiff)
Mizuno F-50 15° 3w (Exsar FS2 stiff)
Bridgestone J36 19° Hybrid (Aldila VS Proto 80 stiff)
Adams Idea Pro 23° Hybrid (Aldila VS Proto 80 stiff)
Adams Idea Pro Forged 5-pw Irons (DG Black Gold stiff)Nike SV Tour Black Satin...

I would check rockbottomgolf.com

They have a few sets under $200.

I'm an intermediate golfer myself and i dont see why to go for "cheap clubs." Save up and get some nice ones. I play about 3 or 4 times a week and I'm not very good but im probably going to buy a set of Ping's or Taylormade or Cobra Irons, just becuase after that. I can keep those for quite some time before they need to be replaced.

Thats just me though, but rock bottom golf does have some great deals.

In my Extreme Sport Stand Bag
Driver: 4DX D-Spec Driver 10.5* Stiff UST SR3
3W: F-60 15* Regular Fujikura E150 Fit-On
Hybrids: 4DX Ironwoods 20* 23* Regular UST SR3
Irons: 4DX CB 5-PW Stiff True Temper ST-90Wedges: Vokey 50* 56*Putter: SabertoothBall: DT Roll

Thanks for all the info and suggestions.

As for me, I consider myself an intermediate player, I suppose. I am a high handicapper, but one of my goals for the season is to get my handicap down a lot. Although it will be hard to do it only playing 4-8 times a month on average, I am a lot more confident and motivated for golf than ever right now.

I started out playing hand me down Northwesterns from my Dad. Then I bought a set of used Northwesterns from Salvation Army. Then I dumped those about 5 years ago for the Wilson set I am still using to this day.

Ideally, I'd like irons that are forgiving but I, unfortunately, could use some more distance too, particularly with my long irons. I have been using steel shafts for as long as I have been playing. Should I consider a switch to graphite? Will that help me at all?

For $200, you can get a set of Snake Eyes or Golfsmith irons. I've played with two guys that have a set of each and they love them.

I will second that with a bold statement: I feel that my Snake Eyes irons are on a par with any Mizuno iron

Wilson Staff Di7 go for around $299 and Ci 6 for around $250 (at Edwin Watts at least), and they are definetely a superior club. For an extra $50 from your budget you can get your hands on clubs like this which would be a better buy really...

A better buy than.........?

try craigslist... I just wrote on another thread that I pick up 5-pw r7 tp's with s300 shafts for $250. I taylormade rep owned them for 6 months and wanted to cover his cost for new set. Lot of deals to be had.
Sticks
