this weekend's coverage was horrible. They would show 3 minutes of golf and then go to commercial. We started watching it on the tivo deal to see that they would show 3 minutes, then commercial, come back and show 1 shot, then do a piece on some guy's swing or the tourney, then commercial, golf for 3 minutes, commercial...over and over again.

It was brutal...especially with all the low scores, there had to be tons of shots worth seeing. We missed most of them though.

i agree. my gf and I watched the second half of the last round and it was just as you said, commercial....2 shots, commercial....2 shots. it pissed me off!

Im definetly not a fan of any of CBS's sports coverage. It seems like the picture quality, the camera work and the commentary is much, much better on NBC.

It was horrible. Not only that it started late in the day. I switched over to espn lpga coverage, a little less commercials, and I recorded it.

Either way, they got me over a barrel, because I only have basic cable.

Maybe in high-def they do, but Ive always thought that the picture quality on NBC is way better.

I personally like CBS better than NBC. Who can stand the droning of Dan Hicks and the drivel of Johnny Miller? In any case, the commercials were unbelievable! Thank god I have a DVR. But I could not believe how much I was fast forwarding! If I had to watch it in real time, I would have turned it off.

I did not like that they only showed coverage of a couple of groups. They have camera's everywhere and we only got to see about 4 groups and nothing else. I did not like that at all.

CBS = poor coverage. Silly comentators and too many commercials. The one tournament they cover pretty well is the Masters. Of course thats because Gary McCord is banned from announcing there and the Masters will not allow many commercials.

Yep. CBS HD is better. NBC still uses a lot more SD cameras.

You can get HD for free. It's broadcast over-the-air (OTA) just like the regular signal. You might need a better antenna and, of course, an HD TV. That won't help with rounds 1 and 2 which are broadcast on TGC, but anything on the networks should be available as long as you are in range. In fact, from what I've heard, the picture for OTA HD can be even better than cable/SAT because the signal isn't compressed. And the Masters in HD is amazing.

Im too cheap to spring for an HD TV. I recently got a digital converter box and that did wonders for picture quality. I think I need to get a better antenna though, the signal seems to come and go, which is pretty annoying.

Today when I was at Target, I was looking at a GE multi-directional antenna that had an electronic tuner that adjusts on its own. I might need to give that a shot. Even in digital though, NBC's picture quality totally blows away CBS.

Yeah, but they would need a big fat corporate sponsor (willing to subsidize the entire event for very little advertising) and a tournament with the kind of prestige and power of the Masters with organizers more interested in tradition than profits. Pretty hard to come by all of those things these days.

That's why I was glad to see the LPGA jettison McDonalds as the title sponsor and reclaim the event as its own. It would be nice though. Watching actual golf is far preferable to watching 3 random putts, a tee shot, and 3 minutes of commercials for competing brands of ED medication. I love when DirecTV offers the bonus channels of the Masters and the U.S. Open that follow one group for the entire round so that you can see every single shot. So much more rewarding. And while we are on the topic of TV coverage, how about some love for the ladies? I know I'm in the minority, but I really enjoy the LPGA. And when their top Major (U.S. Open) only gets 3 hours a day of coverage (and even that gets cut into by early round, non-marquee Wimbleton coverage), its just wrong. [/rant]
