Ping i10 Iron with S400 Shafts

I purchased a set of Ping i10 for a great price so I cant complain to much. I wanted a stiff shaft so what I got was the WRX shafts S400 or was given from my Ping rep. To me they feel like swinging a 2x4, very stiff and very heavy.

Do many people play with S400? Are these more for people with low handicapps and very high swing speeds?

I am thinking of just re-shafting my 4-6 iron with S300 or even something else and leaving my scoring irons with the S400's.

Is it OK to re shaft through Golf Smith or other golf stores?
What shafts do others recomend?

1) You could have anyone re-shaft them for you but PING says they should do it becuase they will adjust the club (tuning port, swing weight, etc...) based on which shafts you use.

2) Shaft depends on your swing and what you want your ball flight to look like...for instance I just recently purchased a new set of I10's and went through the whole fitting system (static and dynamic)...I hit the PING AWT shaft and the PING Z-Z65 shaft...I ended up going with the DG-S300 because of the lanch angle (7 iron)...the Z-Z65 shaft had me launching my 7 iron on the average around 24-26 degrees and I wanted it a bit lower as close to 20-22 would be want I am looking for...so I went with the DG... Just my 2 cents...

Normally S400 shafts is for those who have (real) fast swing speed. That's why they need to be heavy for them to be able to feel the club during the swing. Generally people with fast swing speed and heavy shafts is linked with low handicap, but I don't think that is necessarily true.

Anyway, I'm guessing you don't have enough swing speed to handle the S400 from what you mentioned about their being too stiff and too heavy. The best answer is to get fitted. Other answer is to try your friends' various irons shafts including the S300 and find out which one works best for your swing. The tricky part is not to rely on the ball flight and the best feel (tends to be the softest shaft) reading too much. Why? Different club heads yield different ball flights regardless to shafts, so you can't really tell from how high/low you hit the ball using your friends' (supposedly) different shaft and heads combinations. Make sure you ask for the shaft's detailed specs (brands, hard/soft stepped, flex, shortened/lengthened, etc) once you find one. How many people are playing S400? I can't really say, but definitely lesser than people playing S300. Hope that helps.

The shafts I am getting used to now, but still having problems with the weight of the shaft on my low to mid irons, 4-6.

I was thinking of just re-shafting my 4-6 iron to the S300 and leave my scoring clubs and wedges witht eh S400. It seem sthe shafts for me is more of a weight thing then flex.

I should of got a better fitting that I thought I did, I got a heck of a price so I will deal with re-shafting a few clubs if that is what I have to do.

DG S400's are not stiffer than S300's, but they are heavier. This definitely can effect the feel, but the flex profile is the same. When S300's are manufactured, True Temper sorts Dynamic Gold shafts by weight. The shafts that are too heavy for the S300 designation are labeled S400. They definitely do not play stiffer than X100's as someone said above.

The AWT shaft has a lower kick point, therefore you will tend to hit the ball higher then the Z-Z65 shaft...I tested both of these shafts as recently I made an iron change...I ended up going with the

I-701 Tour irons but I really like the new I15 irons. I hit both of these shafts and if I would have purchased the I15's I would have gotten the Z-Z65 shaft in my irons as I like the ball flight better as I tend to hit the ball high. Hope this helps...:thumb:
