Update:

Average 6-iron SS: 96

Average 6-iron carry distance: 191

Actual medicus power-meter record (Old steel-shafted 42.5" driver): 134mph (competing with buddies. The runner up was a 6'5" quarterback at 125mph. I was surprised he didn't swing faster because he can throw a football 65 yards or so.)

Average medicus power-meter speed with 44" driver: 118

I get a little too much spin at 96+ (5000+ rpms). I get better spin results (~4200) when the speed is around 87. Right now, that's my target. But it's difficult for me to tell the difference between 87 and 70. They both feel pretty slow.

225 yd 6 iron?

If someone could hit it that far, they might just snap a shaft, or the S300 would feel like a senior shaft in their hands. Im calling Bs too. This seems like a bs thread, if you think you hit it so far, then why wouldn't you switch? You obviously aren't swinging that fast, or you would immediately switch over. if your SS was that high, then you would not be able to control those shafts.

I guess my question is what swing speed permits you to hit the most accurate shots. Let's say there is a guy who swings the driver at 120 mph, but his 8 irons go about 140-145 yards -- why? The answer is this produces the best chance for him to score. Decide what allows you to score the lowest. If hitting massively long irons is the answer, go for stiffer shafts to reduce dispersion. I am the opposite. I swing the driver at least 95 percent but almost never hit an iron as hard as I can. There would need to be a reason to do that, like a short side pin behind a trap.

We all have cases (which tend to leave out the conditions such as temperature, elevation, and winds) where adrenalin and confidence allow us to hit much longer shots. I've hit an 8 iron 187 yards in the air to the ball mark with a light following wind at 800 feet elevation in 90 degree weather on a par three, but my 8 iron of choice is to hit it 140-145 yards. This keeps the gaps in my scoring clubs just right and creates the ball flight I want. Some guys I have played with like to gauge off an 8 iron at 160 yards -- and that is right for them. Does not mean they cannot hit much longer irons but if they do, they know their shaft will need a compensating swing.

So find your normal scoring swing, and choose a shaft for that swing, not your slam swing.

p.s. The driver shaft I play is a high kick X flex. Iron shaft is DG lite sensicore S-300. I know if I go after an iron, I need to make sure not to play a draw. But those 140 yard 8 irons with the s-300 feel great and not like swinging a pipe -- does this make any sense? There are many ways to skin this cat.

Here's an option that is different from what the rest have posted . Try the Apollo Hump shafts in an S flex . The reason I recommend these shafts is that I use these and my avg driver SS is ~115 , with a high of ~120+ ( launch monitor ) . I also play extended length shafts ( I'm 6'5" ) . Seeing that you play Maltby irons right now , the Apollos would work since they are .370 parallel tips .

They are a VERY different shaft . They are a fairly smooth shaft for a stronger swinger , yet they are difficult shafts to overpower due to their unique tip design . Pick one up and reshaft one club with one and try it out . Good Luck ... -- K.

Are these magic grits, do the law of physics cease to apply in your kitchen?

Wow, is all I can say to 6 irons of that length, one inch long/hooded clubhead factored in, that's still a wow. My 6 iron now feels like it just got out of the pool.

This thread was dead a while ago, but I posted an update yesterday just to provide some more accurate info. Ignore everything above the update, particularly the thought that a 225-yard 6-iron is my average. I switched to X100s several months ago and have been having great results with them. I was on the LM today at Golfsmith and it was reading around 96 mph SS. The highest was 102 with a carry of around 207. I don't think that's unreasonable. My timing is equally poor at 102 as it is at 82, so slowing down really doesn't help me hit it more accurately. I mainly slow down because it's easier on my body and I can still get some pretty good distance. My real goal is to control my tempo so that I hit it around 190. I've improved quite a bit at that since I first started this thread.
