well not quite! but I got your attention! I just started golfing and have been goin out to the driving range to practice. Im not sure if I gripping the club to tight or what it might be but I get a pretty nasty blister on my right hand on the outerside of my middle finger? Just wondering if anyone else gets this? Im sure its just me doing something wrong but im not sure what!

heres a good way to find the proper grip pressure. grip the club normally, hold it straight out in front of you and point the shaft straight up towards the sky. now grip the club just light enough so it doesnt slip out of you hands, then drop the club to 90º (pointing straight away from your body) and that is roughly the proper pressure for a normal swing.

Totally normal. Wrap it with a little waterproof first aid tape until the callus builds up. (And then again for awhile if you are like me and you split the callus open.)

ok thanks!

Similar question. I'm not getting a blister, but I've worn a hole in my golf glove. Glove on my left hand as I'm a righty...and the hole is on the pinky side down on the meaty part of my hand.

I know I have a super tight grip unless I consciously force myself to relax...is this an indication that I'm still holding it too tight? Or is it normal?

sounds like a killer grip to me. visualize holding a tube of tooth paste with the cap open as the proper grip pressure or holding a bird in your hands without harming the bird.

I once saw a Pro demonstrate the proper grip by having the player hold the club out in front of him parallel to the ground and the Pro pulled on the club.
If he was holding the club too tight he was pull off balance, but if his grip pressure was just right he was able to maintain his balance.

If you grip pressure is just right you will not wear out your golf glove. The proper grip pressure also allow for greater club head speed thus more distance on all your shots and more importantly your finger won't fall off.

Totally agreed with everything else you said but a glove will in time wear out even if your grip pressure is correct. This is just normal and due to stretching, static friction, and impact wear. Your glove will last a lot LONGER though if your grip is correct in form and pressure.

Notice I said form is correct. If your grip itself is bad, exerting more grip pressure just makes the situation worse. Abnormal wear in the heel pad, thumbs, or near the left pinky, is a good sign of poor grip position, bad grip condition, or improper grip size. In the case of the left pinky, you may not have developed enough strength in that finger yet to maintain control of the club at the top of the swing, or you are just loosing that grip. Either condition will have a detrimental effect on glove wear and ballstriking.

I have a glove that has no wearing out on any of the finger or palm area but is starting to change colors with all the sweat.

    • It’s winter here and time hitting at my indoor place.  This year I bought and sold a few sets so I didn’t settle in on anything. For this coming season, starting now I have a choice to make.  What set would you guys use? 1.  Nike Vapor Pro irons - They are like new, hit them some last year before I had to demo other sets.  I love them, original grips, barely used so I’m almost not wanting to use them to keep their value up.  Standard LLL and standard grips. 2. Taylormade P7TW irons - Still in the box.  Got them over a year ago but had too much to hit, never used them.  Have used a set in the past and loved them.  Ended up with my own set custom fit to me -1/4”, 1 degree flat midsize grips.  These are probably not as valuable because they are still available and they are fit to me. I hate to put the Nikes away but it makes more sense to save them than the TW’s…. I dunno….
    • Day 215 (3 Dec 24) - Another very chilly day - opted to work on easy pitches in the backyard. Worked thru the irons and wedges - focused on foot position and tempo.
