I started playing golf this year and I am hooked. I really need some new fairway woods since I am using some really old Dunlop ones that are closed way too much. In addition, I don't want to spent any more than $150 for a 3 and 5. But I know 150 might not be enough for 2 clubs so I could just get one at that limit. Thanks for any suggestions.

I think you will find the common advice is to buy good used clubs, as in Ebay or discontinued models, Many companies discount last years models, especially in the big box stores like Golf Galaxy. This is a good time of year for that as stores are trying to move inventory before the seasons change. For example, Cobra, Cleveland, Nike and others have slightly refreshed their fariway woods this year, but the changes are mostly cosmetic. If you look at the bags of winners at web sites you will find that their wedges, 3 and sometimes 5 wood are often the oldest clubs in their bags.

Well, even though I have no idea how you play, I can still give you some suggestions since you've included a price range. Check these out @ www.golfsmith.com . I'm sure that'd help...

I agree with most of what is said here. Look on Ebay you'll surely pick up some good quality condition clubs if you just hunt around.
In terms of brands i'd have to say Sonartec do lovely woods, tour edge fairway woods are also well credited and i guess Callaway would definately be right up there.
I don't know how good you are , and how well you hit your clubs/yardages.
Consider getting a 3 or 4 wood and then something like a 20* hybrid. that could replace your 5 wood and 3 iron if you hit good distances

I bought my two fairway woods at Rockbottomgolf.com for around $162 total (good price + a 10% off internet deal), and I think they are fantastic for beginners. They are Adams Insight BUL, from the 2007 Golf Digest Hot List. I find that I am using them for shots as close as 140-150 yards, simply because they are easy to hit. I would definitely recommend them.

I'll second the Adam BULs or BTYs; easy to hit with very good results.

I had been looking at the Adams RPM Low Profile woods on Rock Bottom Golf since I had hit them before and really liked them and was now in need of a new 3 wood. They were like $50 - $60 I think. While buying a few things at (of all places) Walmart this weekend, I found they actually had them and were clearance itrems for $35. Bought both a 3 and 5 wood and played yesterday, and can't believe how easy they are to hit and how long I can hit them.

You can get Maltby KE4 heads for $25 each and a good SK Fiber shaft for around the same and they will be as good as anything you will find. I'm hitting my 3-wood longer and straighter then any fairway wood I've had so far...

Try hitting clubs you are considering at the driving range or better yet on the golf course and then check the prices on ebay and then decide which club fits your game.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
