So me and my friends were playing yesterday. My three friends were qualifying for the club championship and I was there to attest scorecards. One of my friends, Karl, was putting together a cinderella story. This kid (actually man) has a history of anger issues but on this day he was able to hold it together for 17 holes and then he got to 18.

#18 at my course is a dogleg right with trouble everywhere and ideally the best tee shot is 200 yds down the left side of the fairway. Karl was +8 and for our club championship 80 or 81 has an outside chance of getting in. So it begins...

-Karl takes 3 wood off the tee (STUPID decision) and tops it into the trees on the left. He smashes the teebox and throws 3 wood against a wooden wall surrounding the tee box.
-His 2nd shot hit a tree and came straight down. He took his club and took a baseball swing at his golf bag.
-He flared a 4 iron into the hazard. He took his bag and chokeslammed it against the previous tree.
-He knocked down his 5th shot and he took another swing at his golf bag and broke his Taylormade burner. He then took the initiative and snapped the shaft over his knee and threw the club into the woods.
-6th shot over the green, 7th...chipped on and 1 putted for an 8. He shot 84.

During this whole time he said every swear you could think of. I was trying so hard not to laugh. At one point he said to me "Brandon, you giggle again I'm going to throw you to the ground and stomp your face into the fairway!"

While this was going on everyone at the proshop was looking in disgust. It was such a loud rudkus that everyone thought someone got hurt. I don't know how he didn't get in trouble. Luckily there was no ranger, and no one in back of us. It was nuts. Funniest thing I've ever seen.

Nice melt down. Why was the 3 wood a bad decision in the first place? Too much club?

Big time. Especially from the normal tees. Unless you hit a

perfect cut. I hit hybrid, my friends hit 3 and 4 iron. It's a position hole. It's short though.. only like 310 yards.

Can you say Anger Management? That "kid"(aptly described) would not be invited in my foursome.

Are you kidding? I would love to be around when someone blew up like that, it would be hilarious. In fact, it sort of reminds me of my brother who will blame every bad shot on something (a bird chirping, or a plane flying overhead, or someone dropping a tee on the ground during his backswing, or... you get the picture). I empathize with the kid, but can't afford to abuse my clubs to the point of having to replace them.

I can't help but to laugh when I'm with friends that have meltdowns. I have mine whenever I do something I don't want to do, but I'll just drop a f bomb silently...or if I hit a shot that's turning more than I want I'll say sh**...but not screaming it...i'll say it under my breath. I've been witih people that I've never played with before that have thrown clubs, and the worst, I saw someone spike his club into the green....TWICE. I called him a f'in di** for doing that. I tried to fix the damage as best as I could and told him to stop acting like a kid..at that point it's embarrassing and down right disrespectful.

It's okay to get upset with yourself....but breaking sh** on the course and screaming at others...or disrespecting ppl...even if it's your boys....that's on another level.
Dan Kim...if you ever play with him if you're in NY or NJ....ask to be placed with a different group... the kid does nothing but buy all this gear...think he's hot sh** but he's never broken 90...and talks a big game like he's a single-digit handicapper.... and when he spikes his club into the ground....you just look at him with the "wtf are you doing?"

has your club said anything to him? even a warning?

sigh . As soon as he got made at the first shot it was all over. All those tense angry emotions transfer itself to every subsequent shot.

I´m pretty sure you dont wanna be around if somebody blows up. In that case it might have been easy for the rest of the flight cuz it was on the last hole - but imagine playing with a pissed guy when this happens to him on the 6th hole and you have to stay with him 2-3 more hours in a tournament - where do you think YOUR score will end up?

My initial thought when I see someone act like that is "I wander if he beats his wife?". Seriously.

No not kidding, on top of that the OP was threatened too for laughing at this guy!!! just childish, good reasoning below:

Ok, you're right. I really don't think I would want to be around. But it would be fun to watch on YouTube where I could laugh in the privacy of my own home without the risk of getting a club broken over my head.

After the round he told us when he cooled off...

"I don't care about the first flight, I wanted to play with you guys in the Championship flight"

He shot 40 on the front which he said was the best round he ever shot for 9 holes. He started his back 9 with a snowman (8) but then strung together a bunch of pars and a birdie (this really impressed me). Then he made a double on our par 3 16th. What got to him was he left a very makeable birdie putt short on 17 and he was at 8 over. He really wanted to break 80 which is probably why he whipped out the 3 wood on the last. Bad course management.

Also his playing partners shot 77 (one was his brother). He really wanted to break 80, but I think 80 or 81 would have got him into the tournament.

    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
