I played in a scramble today , My great friend and golf buddy set this team up with two other guys I had never met before. My buddy said they both could play very well and one was a low handicapper ! One guy was nice and played at the same caliber as myself and friend , But the other guy who lived up to his reputation as a good player (he could hit the ball a mile chip, putt, iron play was very impressive to say the least) But what a complete arogant jackass!
I never in my life met someone I wanted to hit over the head with my driver after the sixth hole I almost walked off the coarse. The only shot that he wanted to keep were his own , Now I'm all for taking the best ball that's the name of the game but he thought he was tiger woods and nobody could do as well as him. he would throw out comments like with that swing that ball never had a chance to make the fairway e.t.c..
By this time my game went down the drain I could do nothing right I might have well just sat in the cart. The other two guys were doing o.k. my buddy was going right down the middle with his drives but the were at least 75 yds short of the jackasses drives ( he could go at least 320yds straight as an arrow no joke) I wanted to tell this jerk where to stick his clubs but let it go and did my best.
I spent four hours every night and all day on the weekends for the last three weeks getting my game in the best shape it's been in for this event and feel like it was a big waste of time. ( we took second by the way no help from me) My buddy was completly put off by this guy as well and said he was sorry for making this team up ( he happens to work with him)

What would you have done?

"No fun on the golf coarse today"

Easy solution. Forget about it and just never play with him again. Guys like that aren't worth a second thought - except for a quick "I'm glad I'm not like that" before you move on.

As for what could have been done during the round - probably nothing. First, he was your buddy's friend, not yours. It was your buddy's job to say something. At best, you could mention something to your buddy like "hey, could you say something to him?"

But more to the point, guys like that don't listen anyway. Any comment would have just created a very bad situation.

If it happens again, just remind yourself every single time he does it of the one universal truth about that guy: he's compensating for his embarrassment about his very tiny wang.

(P.S. It's course, not "coarse".)

I would have done my best to not let it annoy me, but sounds like there was no shot at that. I would not have walked off the course, because I'd want to finish the round.

Harry has it right ... BUT, I may have decided it was time to fire down a bunch of beers and bust this guys balls mercilessly. It wouldn't have mattered about what, but I'd find a sore spot and keep throwing salt in it. Even if he didn't have something obvious, I'd make it up which would just annoy him more.

In golf you sometimes have to play in bad weather, bad wind conditions and bad company of others.

Fortunately in golf you rarely meet jackasses, but when you have to play with them this will be another test of your golf ability under this worst golf condition.

How did the others play along with this jackass?

You should have just got real drunk and started having. Great time, even if it meant your maturity level went down to the point of pissing this "hero" off.

Also, a few, "champ" or "hero" remarks to him when he makes a condescending comment is always fun.

I have zero tolerance for folks like that.

When I was younger, he would have had to gotten a ride home in an ambulance.

Now, I'd just call him out on being a turd, and continue to wear him out with that all day long (think like the "Red Lobster" guy on Happy Gilmore)

I am sorry to hear that. We go out to have fun and enjoy spending time with our friends.

Did he shout, "Whoo!" and blow on the end of his finger like a pistol? I would have done things to 'boost his ego' or make his head swell so much to the point that his head would have blown up. "What a great shot, Tiger" "Man, you never miss a putt". "Do you play on the PGA?" "You should really give up your day job." "Are you in the Hall of Fame?" "Are you in the Champions Tour?" "Wow! Shooter (McGavin)" or "Way to go, McGavin!" What a Jackass! He sounds like Shooter McGavin. I have played with a few of those types of people. A few comments I have made, changed the course of their game.

I played with the same type of person in a tournament yesterday. He threw me off my game completely and I was so pissed. The other two kids hated him as well. At least now I know next time I play with someone like that just to ignore them because they're only gonna screw me up.

My grandfather used to say, "9 out of 10 people are *******s, but we have a disproportionate number of *******s in our family."

I'm afraid that I react to *******ry with stronger *******ry. I would have gotten drunk and just did the "holy F#%# S%#^" hero worship thing after every one of his shots. I would have said things like "I guess we know who’s shot we are using this time", "dude, you rock", and of course "who is this guy?" Every time he suggested we use his shot, I would have said "oh hell yea, who else can hit them like this?" and so forth. By the 5th or 6th hole, he would have hated me. By the turn or shortly after, he would be complaining about me to the others. By the 7th or 8th, he probably would have exploded verbally or swung on me. Either way, it would have been a fun day for me at least.

Congrats on taking second, but yea, some things are not worth it.

    • Got it - so you pick your favorite and then Jayson picks his favorite of those remaining and then Tyson goes twice, then Jayson and finally you? Or something like that anyway Are you doing a weekly release schedule?
    • This weather is curing my winter depression rapidly. “Dugnad” today. A Norwegian word for community or voluntary work. Many clubs has one in spring and one in autumn where everyone is invited to help with various tasks on the course to prepare it for the season or winter. Lots of trees and branches were cleared today. Opening in March is not unlikely at this rate. 15 C and sunny could be mid summer.
    • It’s a start and it’s enough to keep me motivated while I work on consistency, my short game, putting, and correcting my slice. Thanks. Sound advice - I like it. I went ahead and bought a couple spiffy newer Callaway woods on eBay to try out so I won’t have a mixed bag, but I’ve been thinking the same thing and I won’t be letting go of my old Taylormades any time soon.
