Hey,does anyone wax their clubs?? -I mean shaft and heads -someone told me it is illegal in the PGA because it stops spin and the ball "grabs" better -more loft and distance ????

i'm pretty sure its illegal.....In "Who's Your Caddy" by Rick Reilly a gambler named Dewey tomco and his posse do it all the time

put some vasaline or KY on the face and the ball goes far, straight, and stops

it would be fun to do for a fun round, but apparently it addictive.....and again, illegal in all tournement play

driver- R580XD 9.5*
3 wood- m/speed
hybrid- cft ti 4h
irons- fp 4-gap
wedges- 54* and RAC satin 56* 12 bounceputter- 1/2 Craz-Eballs- DT Carry, e5, anything found thats is good shapeshoes-adidashome course - nothing - uh oh. perhaps pleasant view againschool...

I would think Vaseline would cause the grooves to fill which in turn would make the ball "slip" off the face and produce less spin...But I guess its the opposite.

I may be wrong on this, but i think the illegality comes from putting a foreign substance on the face of the club. I wouldn't imagine it would be illegal on the shaft or the rest of the head. If it were on the face you should get LESS spin because the ball can't grab as well. Maybe good for a driver. Bad for a wedge shot. I have waxed mine in the past (not the face), but the improvements cosmetic or otherwise only lasted maybe 4 rounds or so. The sole wiped cleaner after a shot. Just like waxing a car sheds muddy water better. Probably would help fight off rust on a steel shaft, but not much more than keeping them dry.

USGA Rules of Golf - Rule 4-2.b. -- Foreign material must not be applied to the club face for the purpose of influencing the movement of the ball.

The Vaseline makes it all but impossible to put sidespin on the ball, so you pretty much just rip it as hard as you can and it goes in whatever direction you started it on. It does work. It's also completely obvious and completely illegal.

Somebody mentioned Dewey Tomko. He is a part of the high stakes golfers, most of them poker players. They play by 'gamblers rules', which include the wax, unlimited amount of clubs etc. So by normal rules it is illegal. You can watch High stakes golf here .

    • Well, it was four years ago, but… yeah.
    • It's still moving, but it's not very fast (which "almost" might cover), and it begins slowing down around P5.5 to P6 in most good players, for a bunch of reasons. The math gets pretty complex pretty fast seeing as how we have two hands, the club is acting on them while we're acting on the club, etc.
    • I was talking to a buddy of mine and he said he stock a GPS tag in his golf bag. Seems like it might be a good idea. What do you all think? Have any of you put one in there?
    • I am six and a half minutes into this video and honestly don't think I can handle any more of it. I do see some of my swing in his - sucks it inside and gets across the line at the top. He also looks like he comes OTT a little, but is then very in to out. That's probably my cluelessness about the swing showing up though. Did I hear him say he's 15* in to out? That's insane and not something I would think anyone would want to do. I'm surprised he put this out there if his goal is to sell his method to other people, you'd think he'd find someone good who uses it to model it, not himself.
