At that price, you could get some high-end Mizuno or Titleist irons.

yea but will they be custom fitted exactly to your measurements or just off the rack?

I think my set cost me right around $300, which I assembled myself. I had specific components I wanted to buy, so I didn't buy "cheap" or buy "expensive," I just bought what I liked. It eventually put me right around the middle or upper-middle of what was being offered.

The thing is, I'd hit the really expensive stuff and found the Golfsmith gear was a better fit for my game. It was definitely a risk, since I couldn't demo a custom club until I'd bought everything and put it together; I was making an educated guess based on what I thought would be good for me. Fortunately, I guessed correctly. So I ended up getting better (for me, anyway) gear for less. A true win-win in my case. Jess

my iron set for example:
heads 4-SW(32 each): 256
Rifle shafts: 120
grips: 32
ferrels:5
epoxy/misc supplies:20
so right there you're abuot about 450 w/shipping for the components.

The only variable is swingweighting, I ended up with a progression from D1-D4 thru the irons without any adjustments and I like how they feel. The snake eyes iron heads have a nice feature, a space in the hosel, below where the shaft goes in that fits cyclindrical lead wieghts that they sell. Basically, you can use a swingweight scale to figure out which weights to use and then epoxy they in the head before putting the shaft in.

I did go through an iron fitting at a Golf Galaxy store and had them bent more upright to fit better. That was another $50 for the fitting and the bending.

I think the important thing to remember is that it's more important to have clubs that fit your game and your swing, than to have certain brand name.

Alot of places do a free fitting if you buy their clubs from that store. When i went to golf smith i need 1/2" cut off my clubs and they said any clubs i buy(except the cleveland hibores) they will do it for free.

Figured I'd see some in other people's sigs by now but I have not. I was just wondering if I was the weirdo. (g)

Only my putter... and yes, I love it. Capital punishment would be too light a sentence for anyone trying to steal it from me.

$70 for the head alone. I put in a $6 straight Rifle shaft instead of the double bend one... $94 total with the matching grip and head cover. They sell them preassembled for about $130.

ok, I went to golfsmith today and I bit the bullet...

I ordered the snake eyes 675XC forged irons (3-PW) which are 32.99/head.

Golfpride DD2 midsize grips @ 6/grip and true temper dynamic gold shafts @ 10.50/shaft.

Golfsmith charges a flat rate for building the clubs for you at 22/club which ends up being right around one of you guys said.

That would bring the total to right around 570 bucks before tax.

Now, some of you brand *****s might think that's a rip-off, but these forged irons are still $300 cheaper than Mizuno MP-57s which share the same technologies, and I got the grips i want, proper lie angles, and shaft lengths.

But, the best part of it all is that I didn't pay that much, because I refuse to pay sticker prices for anything. When all was said and done, I got myself a 3-PW forged cavity-back iron set for 440 bucks.

I CANNOT wait to get these clubs out on the course! Thanks for starting this thread

I'm thinking about getting the Snake Eyes Viper Tour 1 (8802 style) putter. I'm sick of all the technologically advanced putters with inserts and alignment aids and just want good feel at impact in my putter. Anyone hit this putter before?

I don't currently play any golfsmith components, but my mother has a Maltby driver (Golfworks or Golf Galaxy's components), and I would not hesitate to buy a Snakeyes club if I liked it... in fact I will eventually upgrade my driver and 3-wood, and when I do I will likely look at Snakeyes, KZG, Wishon, and Maltby rather than any "name brands". In my opinion you get much more bang for the buck going the components road, especially with woods... most stock shafts are too week in the tip for me, and tour edition OEM's are usually $300-500. You are not weird at all... components are great.

Thanks for supporting the component companies. The component route is the only way to get a true custom fit golf club.

All of Golfsmith's products are solid. Regardless of price and looks, they will perform better than anything off the shelf. They are NO different than the OEM's and cost a hell of a lot cheaper. I had a few OEM's and they were all garbage. Building my clubs is the way to go. HANDS DOWN

I have not but since starting this thread I've built several Snake Eyes clubs, including the driver and hybrids from the Viper Tour line, and you couldn't pry them out of my hands with a crowbar. I'm betting the putter will be of similar quality.

Were you the one I was talking with about comparing the Mamba 2 and the Viper Tour Black drivers?

I just built a VTB 10-degree this past week. It cleans the Mamba 2's clock. Best driver I've ever hit. Jess

Thanks, I'll probably try one the next time I make it to golfsmith.

Im not ripping on golfsmith at all here, i have a friend who plays their blades, but i really dont like them coming from my mizzy mp60's. Get this, he paid more for his, 500 i think total for his, i paid (well traded) 300 worth of gear for my 60's, with the shafts i wanted(tour concepts).

So my question is, What is the big advantage to these? or is taht i just came across good deals with my irons? I mean mine were used, but you really cant tell. Sure it took my about two months of waiting to find the heads and shafts i wanted, but good stuff happens to those who wait.

I agree that component shopping is great, I have reshafted every club in my bag minus the putter because the shafts were not ot my liking. Having said that while I like the golfsmith and other component companies at times I really wish more OEM's would let you order only certain components. For example I just ordered a new 17* Cleveland Launcher, the shaft I want is not an available custom upgrade from Cleveland so I had to buy a stock club and an after market shaft which obviously affected the price.

What exactly is an OEM?

"OEM" stands for "Original Equipment Manufacturer," typically applied to automotive uses where people buy, say, parts for a Ford made by a Ford instead of parts for a Ford made by Purolator.

In golf equipment, it seems to mean the big name-brand outfits (Taylor Made, Titleist, etc.). Club building: You'll need specific tools (ferrule installer, shaft prep strips if working with graphite, bench vise shaft holders, etc.) and I would advise looking on Golfsmith's online site for help there, even if you don't buy from them. A good bench vise is a must. I would also recommend a hand drill and Dremel. You can get away with buying very few tools, or you can spend a lot. It all depends on what you want to do. The basic stuff is cheap. If you want to be able to bend your clubs for custom lie angles, etc., that's when you start to get up in cost. I'd say you're looking at an investment of around $100 if you already have the drill (for coning and deburring hosels) and a bench vise. If you don't, or if you want to start doing real custom stuff, budget $500 and even that might not be enough. Jess

    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
