i'm thinking about killing my 3 iron and going to a 3 wedge format...

52º/56º/60 or...

51º/55º/59º

it really all depends on what i get fitted for and what happens with that.

I plan on going Driver/3 Wood/Hybrid/4-PW/GW/SW/LW and then have a 3 iron and 5 wood as well, mixing and matching out of my bag as needed per course.

While talking to Ken Venturi at a golf show, I asked him about how to select a set of clubs. His advice " you hit a driver 14 times unless you go out of bounds. you putt every hole unless you chip in. The next most important is the wedge and then the clubs for the distances you need"

I'd guess 3 wedges will get more use than a 3 iron. I laugh at guys who try to chip out from under trees using a 3 iron when they cannot hit a 3 iron from the middle of the fairway. Use your trouble wood in the trees.

If you dont hit your 3-iron very well and have a hybrid, then replacing the 3-iron with another wedge would probably be a good idea.

I just eliminated my 5 wood and went to 3 wedges. Now I just bought a new 1 iron and go with 2 wedges again.

I just took out my 5 wood. Couldn't hit it anyway, so it was an easy decision for me.

I just took my 3 iron out of my bag for the 52 wedge, and love the extra wedge that I use way more than I did the three iron

I use the 3 wedge set-up. A 54 Vokey, a 60 Vokey, and a 58 Cleveland with extra bounce. Gives me some variety. The varying bounces on the clubs comes in handy.

yea ive been thinking about this also, and its perfect for me beacsue i only ave 13 clubs anyway

i have a 56 and a 60, so i am planing on getting a 52

then my setup would be

driver/3 wood/hybrid/4-pw/52/56/60/putter

i think that should be a good setup

I have 3 wedges, 52, 56 and 60 alone with my PW which is 47 degrees.

I have a 30 yards gap from my PW and 52 degree wedge. I have to play a 3/4 to 1/2 shot with my PW for distances of 110 - 120. I could buy a 50 degree wedge since I took out my 5 iron, then I will have 4 wedges plus a PW.

cannot agree more with your move. I replaced my 3 iron with a hybrid (21-deg). But I'm also not very comfortable with the 60-deg LW. So, I do most of my pitching/chipping with either the GW (51-deg) or SW (56-deg).

What a timely discussion. I currently have 3 wedges (Pitching (46), Utility/Gap (50), and Sand (54/12.5)). I'd really like to get a 60/8, but I'm already at 14 clubs. I rarely use my 18 hybrid, so I could take it out. I have a 21H in place of a 3I, and don't hit the 18H any better or further.

But really, do I need 4 wedges??? Or does the PW not count as a 'true' wedge?

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
