My son and I are relatively new to golf, we've been playing exactly one year. I'm taking my family to Canada in a week, can't afford Europe any more, and my son and I want to sneak off and get in a round in Montreal and Quebec City. Are there any courses that any one would recommend that aren't overly challenging or over expensive? Many thanks in advance.

How far from Montreal's island are you willing to get? as I live just off the island I know more courses off of it, and I've only been playing for a year as well so I don't know that many courses yet. my favorite is Base De Roc, Ile de Montreal is really good from what I heard, and it's on the Island (eastern part of the island), I could Try to dig a bit further for you, especially north east of the Island, I'm playing a new course (well new to me) in a few hours

Base de Roc : http://www.golfbasederoc.com/ is a little more than half an hour north-east of Montreal, is good and not that expensive. Ile de Montreal : http://www.cgimgolf.com/ is 2 links courses that are a little bit more expensive and from what I have heard quite a bit challenging. it is located in the eastern part of Montreal's Island (I still havn't played there) when are you planning to be over here? hope this helps, Simon

As for quebec in the not expensive category I would suggest,

Golf Lotbiniere http://golflobiniere.com/
Golf L'auberiviere http://www.golflauberiviere.com/
Golf Stastny www.golfhotelstastny.com (a littble longer and tougher)
Golf Mont-Tourbillon www.monttourbillon.com (use a cart)

A little bit more expensive
Golf de la faune www.golfdelafaune.com

and the best (and expensive)
Golf la Tempete ( www.golflatempete.com )

hope it helps
And welcome to our 400th anniversary.

Thanks for all the advice. We are driving so as long as it is relatively close to Montreal we are fine. I don't mind driving 45 mins if it means playing somewhere that could be fun. We're not fussy at all. OUt of interest what time does it get dark right now. In New Jersey by 8.20 it too dark to play. Is it similar there? we're trying to figure out if we could get two rounds in on one day.

Again, thanks for the advice.

Sorry for not finishing up the thread here. My son and I ended up playing two really great courses in Montreal.

One was definitely a local course, with a lot of local personality. Meadowbrook Golf Club. THe starter "Serge" was hysterical, he has more trivia in his head than anyone else I have ever met. The course was forgiving but the greens were really difficult. It was in great condition and a lot of fun.

The other course we played was Club de Golf D'ile de MOntreal , the North Course. THat was a lot more challenging, and they keep you on a quick pace. The facilities were amazing, the bar/restaurant was first class. Everyone we met there was really cool. This was a very classy place, but great value

Both course had their own flavour, I am glad we got to play both.

    • Good advice. In general, you want to take whatever weight you are lifting to a couple of reps before failure, for muscle growth. There are other tactics for PT related stuff. I would trust your PT person.  For muscle growth, you can go like 30 reps to failure. It is tougher to gauge. Also, it takes 2x as long to do the same number of working sets per week if you are doing 15 instead. It is way less efficient, but your case is special because of the injury/aggravation to the hip.
    • Several years ago I got paired with a twosome of golfers, one of which had a maybe 5-year-old son with him. The kid had a putter and a 7i with him, and on some holes he would drop a ball near the green, chip on, and putt. If the kid started to get distracted, the dad would ask, "Do you need to rest?" The kid would nod yes, and then take his dad's seat riding in the cart for a couple of holes. It was a slow day, and the kid was polite and friendly. We got through 18 just fine. (If it had been a crowded course day, I'm sure it would have been less pleasant.)
    • Caution for the seniors on weight training: Listen to your body. (I'm 75) I got a recent session with an orthopedist after a training-related injury. I put too much weight on a new resistance machine at the gym and ended up with bursitis in my left hip. Of course, it's the hip I dislocated back in 2023. I have my first physical therapy session tomorrow. I remarked that some days I can do 45 lbs. chest press - two sets - without much effort. But other days it drops down to 30 (😩) with just one set. (Complicating factor: I had digestive problems in this fall and lost about 20 lbs., with slip in muscle tone.) Orthopedist said that I want to feel some resistence, but that I should go with lots of reps with manageable weights rather than trying to set some sort of lift-pound record. I'm sure I'll get some refinements on lifting during tomorrow's PT.
