William Willett, in part because he disliked having his golf rounds cut short by dark, conceived Daylight Saving Time.

"The prominent English builder and outdoorsman William Willett conceived DST in 1905 during one of his pre-breakfast horseback rides, when he observed with dismay how many Londoners slept through the best part of a summer day. An avid golfer, he also disliked cutting short his round at dusk. His solution was to advance the clock during the summer months, a proposal he published two years later.[19] He lobbied unsuccessfully for the proposal until his death in 1915;"

Alice Cooper and Sean Connery are both honorary members of the the Moscow City Golf Club, founded in 1987. Alice Cooper's locker number is 009, and Sean Connery's locker number is (of course) 007.

1946: Sam Snead was one of the few Americans who journeyed across the Atlantic for the first post-war Open. As the train pulled into St. Andrews and he saw the Old Course for the first time, he wasn't sure what it was. "What abandoned course is this?" he said to the man next to him. Snead learned to respect the course, and he closed with a 75 to finish at 290, four shots ahead of Johnny Bulla.

It looked good for Scotland's Raymond Russell heading into the last round of the 2001 Compass English Open at the Marriott Forest of Arden course. On the 17th green, and 2 holes away from a top 10 finish, he threw his ball to his caddy for cleaning. The caddy missed the ball and it rolled into the lake. They searched the lake but couldn't find it and the the result was a two-stroke penalty and over £4,000 in prize money.

Many Japanese golfers carry hole-in-one insurance, because it is traditional in Japan to share one's good luck by sending gifts to all your friends when you get an ace. The price for what the Japanese term an albatross can often reach $10,000.

Fact: There is absolutely no point whatsoever in yelling "Get Down" at a Bridgestone golf ball because they are made in Japan so they don't understand a word of english.

10-15% of people are left handed (13% according to Wikipedia).

Only seven left-handed golfers have ever won on the PGA Tour, and 21 of their 37 victories have come from one man: Phil Mickelson.

Bonnie Bryant, who captured the 1974 Bill Branch Classic, is the only left-handed golfer to win an LPGA event.

Bobby Jones had a very violent temper that sometimes got out of control early in his golf career. He heaved a club in the 1916 U.S. Amateur and later hit a woman in the leg with another airborne niblick in the 1921 event. In fact, the USGA President at the time, George Walker (great-grandfather of George W. Bush) told Jones that he would never play in a USGA event again unless he could keep his temper under control.

Snow golf was invented by Rudyard Kipling when he was, living in Vermont in the 1890's. He painted his golf balls red so that they could be located in the snow.

Let's try to make sure the facts are still facts. That one's clearly five years old, no?

CONDOR - 4 under par This mighty bird gives its name to the rarest of all occurences in golf: a hole in one on a par five. Only two are recorded. Shaun Lynch on the 496 yard 17th at Teign Valley in July 1995 and L. Brice on the 480 yard 5th at Hope CC, Arkansas in 1962. Both holes are dog-legs.

Fergus Muir, 66, was playing in a friendly three-ball on the Eden course when the group reached the par-three 5th. It was blowing a gale, as it is prone to do at Andrews. Muir, a 13-handicapper, had already seen his partners, Peter Gillespie and George Fullerton, who are fellow members of St Andrews New Golf Club, hit their tee-shots over the green and decided, with the confidence of a man who clearly does not suffer from the yips, to use his putter.

“We saw the ball go towards the two-tier green over the undulating mounds in the fairway and then lost sight of it,” Muir said. On reaching the green, he was amazed to find that he had fiddled and finagled the ball in for the first hole in one in his life. It had travelled 375 feet from tee to cup.
--Longest putt to this day. (Although technically it's not really a "putt" )
