Work on getting a steady tempo with all your clubs - driver same as wedge on full swings - this will improve your consistency on shots -> better lengths on average on all clubs.

As a beginner dont practice your swing with your driver - but with a mid iron.
Unless i practice my driver specifially i hit about 20 balls a week with my driver compared to about 600 with irons/wedges/3wood - if you master all these clubs, you also will be able to hit a driver solid.

Only slightly downhill. I have a good swing is all. I'm tall and strong and so I have a lot of leverage. I'm gonna start taking a camera on the course and start taking pics of my big drives. No one believes anyone without proof here.

Well, you got expect a little skepticism when the average driving distance on polls on this forum rivals, if not exceeds, the average driving distance on the PGA tour.

So, how are you going to do the camera thing? You take a picture of the Tee box, hit the ball and then what?

There are many factors that separate tour players from amateurs. If there's any facet of the game that good amateurs can be comparable with the pro's is distance. Its very doable to be able to carry the ball 280 yards. With todays technology...golfers are often expecting to hit the 300 mark with their drives. I certainly dont average....but i can definitely drive the ball 300 yards...and im sure there are plenty of members on this forum who can do the same. There are even plenty of juniors who can really get the ball out there as well.

Sorry, age 17 and 120ish pounds doesn't scream 300yd drives to me. Call me crazy.

M11 is right though, distance isn't really what separates pros from amateurs. Every time someone compliments me on my swing/distance I tell them "unfortunately, there's only one number that matters, and its not distance".

I'd honestly start with your body. Assuming you're not already, get your body into golf shape. Flexibility is a huge plus with it comes to golf. I noticed a huge difference when i started working out more. I know what you're going to say "what about all these out of shape johnsons out there that hit the ball a mile?" freaks of nature. lol. try widening your stance a little. flatter swing plane. equipment? is it time for an upgrade? If you have the proper coil (ie: hips and shoulder turn) and swing mechanics, you should be good.

Thank you NorCalGolfer!

I hate to be the ONLY one screaming at the top of my lungs that golfers need to "fix the machine" first and the rest will fall into place, given that a golfer knows how to swing a club with proper technique. If the body won't do what you or your pro wants it to, you will NEVER be able to execute a proper and repeatable golf swing.

    • Day 1: After a long practice layoff due to injury, vacation, winter darkness, and work stuff, I'm trying to start back up again. Today I just hit balls with keys from my lesson 6-ish weeks ago; neutral grip and centered turn. Gonna work with that for a few weeks, see how it goes, and then get a lesson scheduled.
    • It’s not live on free to air tv in the UK, and hasn’t been since 1995. ( I pay a subscription to Sky for generally good golf coverage). There are limited highlights on the BBC for some golf events, but that’s it. Are other/all PGA events on NBC?  Allowing ticket scalping is a systemic failure across sports and showbiz, which could be legislated against, but in the UK is not in any meaningful way. I don’t know much about the secondary market in the US or anti scalping measures.  Charging more to keep prices down is an interesting concept, in practice no doubt you are right even if It sounds a bit Catch 22  Do you think sports tickets and broadcast rights  should be sold on a purely capitalist basis, or is there an argument to say that some sports might benefit more from wider exposure and affordable access. ( golf in the US is apparently not one of these if tickets sold out at those prices so quickly)  Fans might benefit from cheaper tickets and in the UK at least, TV coverage that reaches a wider audience.
