It's well worth getting a DV cam. In fact, here on The Sand Trap, we're going to start a new video analysis column. So you could send your video to us...

A web cam is effectively a cheap DV cam... except you probably want to have it on a laptop to record a golf swing. Which isn't nearly as convenient as a DV cam. And since a cheap DV cam is $300, less than a new putter or driver... it's one of the best purchases you could be able to make. And the problem with web cams is that they often don't have the higher frame rates or clarity (resolution) of an actual DV cam, so your results are really limited. BTW, the swing software you're looking for is here: http://www.v1golf.com/ .

A DV cam is a great purchase not only for your golf game. Like EB said they have gotten very reasonably priced, heck they sell them at wal-mart. If you get one there is also another nice swing analysis program called cSwing. It is nice because it isn't too expensive and you can download it and try it free for 7 days. Check it out: http://www.cswing.com/index.html

I have a tiny tiny canon SD400 digital camera. It also has video capabilities. It will shot 640x480 at 30 frames which is pretty darn good quality. I set it in 320x240 at 15 frames and I can record an entire bucket of about 80 balls on a 1 GB card and watch my swing on the camera's screen or dump it into my computer at home. I spent only 300 bucks for the camera.

Hey guys, just wondering if there is some software that helps with where you club should be as far as being on plane when you videotape it. I have my shots go right and I think I swing slightly over the top and in and want to work on it with video. Ive seen iacas post pictures with plane lines so thats why i ask. Thanks guys.

For what OS? We're building software for the Mac in a Home and Pro version.

For Windows, there's V1 home and a few others.

I don't know if I understand. You draw a line... that's the plane line. You can draw it in the wrong spot, I suppose... but it's just a drawing tool and you use it to draw a line from the ball to either your hand plane, elbow planed, turned shoulder plane, etc.

oh okk. Yea I just wasnt sure exactly how it works or it I even have enough knowledge to draw my own plane line. I guess if I just draw the plane line like how ben hogan shows your head through a glass plane down to the ball that would work, right? Il post what I do on here as well to see if anyone can add to it.

also whats the difference between drawing the line from the ball to your hand and drawing to your shoulders, like the "head in glass window plane"

well I guess I can get my hands on the leadbetter interactive dvd number 5 which is the swing analysis software for your computer. Il see if its any good and I also downloaded the V1 home, ive read you cant save anything with the free edition though, which isnt good.

You can also upload your videos to swingacedemy.com. They have an online analysis tool where you can draw on your videos.

Cheers,

well I installed the #5 dvd which is the swing analysis software, On it david recommends that you use a camera that has 1,000 frames per second atleast so their is no blur. Im pretty sure my camera only does 30 fps and its not a cheap piece of crap. what do you guys usually use?

1000 FPS is overkill, and you'd need a really expensive camera to get a decent resolution at such high framerate. 60-300 FPS is preferred, obviously the higher the better, as long as the resolution is high enough. You can try your 30 FPS camera and see how it works out. On the downswing, a 30 FPS camera won't be able to catch everything, but it is definitely better than nothing.

I've got V1 Home and it's a decent program. All I really use it for is drawing lines to see if the head moves, hip push etc. Most of it I can see without a line. I use Quicktime for watching videos most of the time. It can skip one frame at the time and is easy to use when I'm picking out frames from a video to post online. Here is a TST article on the subject of filming your swing: http://thesandtrap.com/playing_tips/filming_your_swing

hey thanks. Yea that swing analysis software explains how to set up the camera for filiming. It can be hard to get the camera in exactly the right spot when filiming if you dont set up markers of where you are going to stand when filiming yourself.

Do you ever use the line to check plane? I downloaded a youtube of Tigers down the line shot and he was pretty much right on plane all on the backswing and on the downswing,

Depends what plane you are "on". There are lots of planes you can take. I check my plane by looking at the position of my hands and club in relative to my body on the backswing.

Ive just been drawing the line directly up the shaft of the club at address. Isnt that the one to draw?
