This is my Dad swinging his driver. It was his best drive of the day, so let me know what you think he is doing well in this video, and where he could stand to improve. He is prone to pushing the ball right. Not slicing necessarily, but pushing with a fade.

Thanks.

Your dad has a nice finish to his golf swing and the other best thing he is doing is playing golf with you! The swing looks very upright to me and he can try taking the club back a little flatter and try bring his hands closer to his body about a hand distance away.

The only other thing he might work on is a slow take away to help ensure a full shoulder and hip turn. It nice to see dad and son playing golf together, you are a luck guy!

Very cool you're golfing with your Dad. My dad doesn't and my son is too busy with college.

IMHO I would suggest to your Dad to keep his left elbow locked straight through his back swing, down swing, and as long as he can to the finish (until his right arm straightens and his left begins to fold). He'll harness more power from his core muscles in his torso instead of his arms. Its best not to try to swing fast with this adjustment, he'll get plenty of distance without the risk of getting hurt. Good ball contact is the key.

Also, he can get his spine straighter by sticking his butt out, this will help with his rotation.

He looks to be controlling his swing with his arms and hands. At impact, his hips have not turned past his address position. Whatever control, or method that is used, the body movements must lead the arm swing.

You can compare this with the pros in slow motion at http://www.pgatour.com/swingplex/ . Some of these have a "Back" button. That gives you a down the line view. "The Golf Swing and It's Master Key Explained" by Noel Thomas is instruction that made the pro swing easy for me. If you and your dad want to try it, just search for the title on Google. The e-book is only $6.00 with a money back gaurantee.

Thanks for the advice. I love playing golf with my Dad. He got me into the game and now that I am playing a little more consistent than him, I want to try and help his game out.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
