Okay, I just recently got a new putter, the Odyssey Sabertooth. For close and mid-range distance I like it but for long putts I'm having some trouble. The local muni's that I play have real slow greens and I have to really bang it in order to get enough distance. When I bang it that hard, I push and pull the putts often. Any advice on long distance will be very helpful. I've been even thinking about chipping it from the green.

I have this very same problem especially on slow greens. This is why I prefer greens to be a little faster. To make things worse I am a back and through putter. I think the key is to let the putter come back a little more inside on those longer putts and then release it around and back inside on the follow through. If your an "around" putter I think this comes easier.

I've had the same problem recently with long lag putts (direction, not distance). Recently I opened my stance and that seems to have reigned my direction in.

Use your driver or 3w to putt. I've tried it on long ones, really helps. Its probably even harder to control though since the driver is so long.

I have the same problem sometimes with accuracy on long putts. My problem is usually a big pull and the ball ends up way left. I use a standard right hand low grip. One day I was playing around on the practice green and went left hand low. I found that it really helped me with the accuracy. I was able to keep putts online and didn't close the face at impact. It takes some getting used to as far as controlling the distance, but after about 5-10 minutes I had that worked out as well. Now anytime I have a long putt that I think I might pull, I just go left hand low and my lagging has improved.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Your long putts will be more consistent:

1) putt with your shoulders only and take your wrist and hands out of the swing
2) keep your arms close to your body but relaxed
3) distance control is the most important factor in long putts.
4) distance is control by the length of your back swing and your follow through distance

Practice Practice Practice. That's what it boils down to, or maybe carry another putter in your bag for the long ones

Eventually, I'll get the hint and stop advertising, which is against the rules.

I putt from off the green a lot with a 4 hybrid. The lies are tight around a lot of my home course's greens and I'm finally getting it that this can be a safer shot than a dumped chip, especially if the lie is tight AND wet. I miss on average almost 11 greens a round. At least 2 or 3 of those times a round I use my hybrid.

I have often thought about using this club when I'm on the green but 60 or 80 feet from the hole. I've just never made myself go through with it yet.

Thats exactly the reason I switched from an odyssey insert putter to a steel face.

Well I didn't have any really long putts today but the mid range putts were fairly decent. 32 putts is a vast improvement over high 30's and low 40's.
