I am having problem hitting low 5 iron puch shot to keep ball under tree line. I have Big Bertha irons and have read that it is difficult to keep the ball low with those. Help!! I am hitting ball off of the back foot, taking 3/4 back swing, short follow through, and hitting ball with descending stroke.

Try hitting the ball on a shallower angle and taking only a thin divot. The more you hit down on the ball, the higher the ball will go. If you sweep a 5-iron off the ground and try and keep your hands below your belt, the ball won't go very high.

You don't really want to hit with a descending blow. Hitting down on the ball is what gets it up in the air.

The biggest thing for me is keeping my left wrist well in front of the ball at impact (which delofts the club.) and keeping my swing shallow. Everything else you mentioned is correct, (back in stance 3/4 swing)

Do you not carry a 3 or 4i?

Thanks for the quick responses. I carry a 4 iron and a 3 hybrid.

It can be done w/o too much difficulty.

I play simular irons as your BBs. Today I played a round with my son. First hole I missed the green badly right....through some trees.

I took a nine iron and hooded it and made a descending stroke through the ball with a low finish. The ball carried over the immdiate roots and cart path....about 40 yards and went down low and hot bumping through the trees and onto the green leaving me an uphill putt of 25 feet (I two putted it for a bogey).

This was a shot that I've practiced on the range....along with the low 5 iron you described. I like hitting several of these just to warm up prior to taking full swings with wedges.

in addition to what everyone else said...i think its important to try to hold onto your release a bit. If you release too early....your going to top the ball and the result will be pretty poor. Even though you are hitting a pretty simple shot...you still need solid contact. Keep your head down and try to consciously think to not cast the club until the shot becomes easier for you to execute.

I keep most of my body weight on my front foot while playing these,i notice also with punch shots people whip the club back very quick which is potential for disaster, same as other people said(yourself)play it back e.t.c and have a slightly open stance and hands forward during impact.A nice tempo is very good.

when you play your 5 iron in the back of your stance look at the club face to see where the angle is facing. I adjust the club angle so that it is perpendicular with the ground and adjust slightly upward depending how high off the ground I want to play the shot. You need to practice this shot because the ball will flight low but it might draw on you so you need to be aware of how you take the club back.

    • Day 140: did a stack session.
    • Day 1: After a long practice layoff due to injury, vacation, winter darkness, and work stuff, I'm trying to start back up again. Today I just hit balls with keys from my lesson 6-ish weeks ago; neutral grip and centered turn. Gonna work with that for a few weeks, see how it goes, and then get a lesson scheduled.
    • It’s not live on free to air tv in the UK, and hasn’t been since 1995. ( I pay a subscription to Sky for generally good golf coverage). There are limited highlights on the BBC for some golf events, but that’s it. Are other/all PGA events on NBC?  Allowing ticket scalping is a systemic failure across sports and showbiz, which could be legislated against, but in the UK is not in any meaningful way. I don’t know much about the secondary market in the US or anti scalping measures.  Charging more to keep prices down is an interesting concept, in practice no doubt you are right even if It sounds a bit Catch 22  Do you think sports tickets and broadcast rights  should be sold on a purely capitalist basis, or is there an argument to say that some sports might benefit more from wider exposure and affordable access. ( golf in the US is apparently not one of these if tickets sold out at those prices so quickly)  Fans might benefit from cheaper tickets and in the UK at least, TV coverage that reaches a wider audience.
